CHARLOTTE, N.C. >> Andrej Stojakovic scored 29, Mady Sissoko and Rytis Petraitis each posted double-doubles and Cal rallied to beat Virginia Tech 82-73 in double overtime in Tuesday’s first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

The 15th-seeded Golden Bears (14-18) will play No. 7 seed Stanford on Wednesday in a second-round matchup between former Pac-12 rivals. Cal was coming off a 112-110 four-overtime loss at Notre Dame in Saturday’s regular-season finale.

Sissoko scored the first two baskets in the second overtime and Stojakovic polished off an 8-0 run to give the Golden Bears the lead for good.

Big 12 commissioner believes NCAA Tournament should expand to 76 >> Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark is in favor of expanding the men’s NCAA Tournament to 76 teams, and he believes a decision could come in the next few months, opening the possibility of proposed changes being implemented as soon as next year.

Yormark spoke before the start of the Big 12 Tournament on Tuesday.

“I’m in favor of expansion to 76. I think that’s the right number,” he said. “I think the economics candidly have to work. CBS and TNT have a marquee (television) asset with the tournament. I know they know that. But in order for us to expand, they need to come to the table and provide the right economics.”

This year’s edition of March Madness will be the 40th men’s bracket since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985; it later grew to the current 68-team configuration. The women’s bracket increased to 64 in 1994 and added four more teams in 2022.

Arizona State coach Hurley expected to return for 11th season >> Arizona State men’s basketball coach Bobby Hurley is expected to return for his 11th season, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.

Hurley has one year left on his contract in a tenure that’s included three trips to the NCAA Tournament and multiple seasons with key injuries, including this year.

Curry announced as investor in Unrivaled league >> Steph Curry was announced as an investor in Unrivaled, adding to a long list of high-profile stars to align with the startup 3-on-3 women’s basketball league.

The four-time NBA champion’s investment was included in Unrivaled’s oversubscribed Series A investment round in December, in which the league said it secured more than $28 million in Series A funding to go along with the $7 million raised during the league’s seed round, which was announced in May 2024, totaling $35 million for the league to date.

Multiple reports on Monday said it was worth $32.4 million. At that figure he could have the highest average salary among managers, topping a five-year deal in 2024 for Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell worth more than $40 million.

Roberts heads into his 10th season at the helm with the highest winning percentage in major league history at .627 (851-507).

Red Sox right-hander Bello won’t be ready for start of season >> Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello won’t be ready for the start of the season, manager Alex Cora told reporters.

Bello, the opening day starter last season, has been dealing with soreness in his shoulder this spring. The Red Sox have been taking a cautious approach with him.

The 25-year-old was 14-8 last season with a 4.49 ERA. He had 153 strikeouts over 162 1/3 innings. The pitcher from the Dominican Republic agreed to a $55 million, six-year contract last March after originally signing with the Red Sox in 2017 for $28,000.
