Ja Morant showed off an imaginary gun. The NBA hit back with a real fine.
A day after Morant again used his aiming-a-gun gesture to celebrate making 3-pointers, the Grizzlies’ star was fined $75,000 by the league Friday. It’s the second time this week that Morant — who was suspended twice in 2023 for incidents with actual weapons — heard from the league about mimicking the act of using a gun during a game.
The league called the gesture “inappropriate,” adding that “Morant was previously warned by the league office that this gesture could be interpreted in a negative light.”
The first interaction with the league office resulted in that warning, after Morant and the Warriors’ Buddy Hield made the gesture at one another during a Grizzlies-Warriors game on Tuesday. The warning from the league office was evidently ignored, since Morant made similar gestures in Thursday’s game against Miami.
Morant and other members of the Grizzlies have used the gun gesture numerous times this season, including Thursday. Morant made a 3-pointer in the first quarter of that game, then turned toward the Memphis bench with his left arm fully extended, his right thumb pointed in the air and his index and middle fingers pressed together.
CELTICS 123, SUNS 103 >> Jaylen Brown scored 31 points and hit three 3-pointers and host Boston broke the NBA record for 3-pointers in a season in a victory Friday over Phoenix.
The Celtics were 14 of 39 from 3-point range to push their season total to 1,370. Golden State held the previous record with 1,363 in 2022-23.
After having their nine-game winning streak halted in their previous game, the Celtics coasted to the victory.
Devin Booker led the Suns with 37 points. Phoenix has lost five straight.
KINGS 125, HORNETS 102 >> Zach LaVine had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Domantas Sabonis added 24 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists and visiting Sacramento rolled past Charlotte to remain in 10th place in the Western Conference standings.
Miles Bridges had 22 points and Moussa Diabate added 15 points for the Hornets.
Pistons 117, Raptors 105 >> Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 23 points, Jalen Duran had 21 points and 18 rebounds and visiting Detroit beat Toronto to wrap up its first playoff berth since 2018-19. The Pistons won a franchise-worst 14 games last season.
