Athletics: Lawrence Butler hit three home runs, Brent Rooker and Seth Brown each had two homers, and the Athletics routed the first-placed Phillies 18-3 on Sunday in Philadelphia. Butler had six RBIs. Rooker tied his career high with five RBIs for the A’s, who entered with the fourth-fewest wins in baseball. Their eight home runs were estimated at a combined 3,340 feet. “It sounds like the distance back to Oakland,” manager Mark Kotsay said. “They hit the ball hard today. There weren’t really any cheap home runs.” Zack Gelof hit a grand slam off Phillies catcher Garrett Stubbs in the ninth inning. Trea Turner homered for the Phillies, who began play with the most wins in baseball and ahead of the Braves by 9 ½ games in the NL East. The Phillies were trying to extend their club record of 62 victories before the All-Star Game and match the 1973 and ’74 Dodgers for the most NL wins before the break. Joey Estes (4-4) allowed two earned runs on four hits in six strong innings. It was just the Phillies’ third home series loss and first since losing consecutive series to the Braves and Reds to open the season. Butler hit three two-run shots, in the fifth, seventh and eighth. The last of the trio went 449 feet into the second deck in right-center field. “I wanted to put the barrel on the ball,” Butler said. “I got it how I wanted to, and it went pretty far.” It was the first time he’d ever hit three homers in a game at any level. “That was a pretty cool moment,” he said. Rooker completed a red-hot three games in Philadelphia in which he went 7 for 12 with a double, three HRs and seven RBIs.

Orioles: Cedric Mullins hit a two-run double in the ninth to give the Orioles a 6-5 victory over the visiting Yankees — after an error by shortstop Anthony Volpe kept the two-out rally going. The Yankees actually made two defensive misplays at the end of the game. Mullins’ liner appeared catchable, but left fielder Alex Verdugo started in at first and couldn’t recover well enough to prevent the ball from going over him. Ben Rice hit a three-run HR in the top of the ninth off Craig Kimbrel to put the Yankees up 5-3, but closer Clay Holmes couldn’t hold a lead either. The Orioles remained first in the AL East heading into the All-Star break.

Giants: Mike Yastrzemski tripled and scored in the bottom of the ninth when the relay throw skipped past 3B Diego Castillo, giving the Giants a 3-2 home win over the Twins. Ryan Walker retired two batters to win. Reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell allowed one hit and was perfect through six innings. Snell retired the first 18 in order before Manuel Margot laced a 2-2 fastball into left field.

Extra innings: Michael Toglia became the first Rockies switch-hitter to homer three times in a game, leading the visitors to an 8-5 win over the Mets. Ezequiel Tovar homered twice and Brennan Doyle homered again as the Rockies hit a season-high six HRs to finish the three-game series with 10. ... The Royals acquired RHP Hunter Harvey from the Nationals for a minor-league infielder and their competitive balance pick in Sunday’s draft. Harvey, 29, pitched in 43 games for the Nats, going 2-4 with a 4.20 ERA and striking out 50 with just 12 walks in 45 innings.
