Rangers trade Lindgren, Vesey to Avs
The Avalanche have made another splash ahead of the NHL trade deadline by acquiring defenseman Ryan Lindgren, pictured, and winger Jimmy Vesey from the Rangers. They sent a second- and a fourth-round pick, young forward Juuso Parssinen and veteran defenseman Calvin de Haan to New York for a pair of pending unrestricted free agents and the rights to unsigned prospect Hank Kempf. The Rangers are retaining half of Lindgren’s salary, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The Rangers will receive the better of their own or the Hurricanes’ pick in the second round and the better of the Hurricanes’ or Canucks’ in the fourth round of the draft later this year, the person said. More player movement is coming before the deadline Friday. The Predators scratched pending free agent winger Gustav Nyquist on Saturday for trade-related reasons. The Avs traded top-line forward Mikko Rantanen to the Hurricanes in late January, getting a younger player back in return in Martin Necas. It’s possible general Chris MacFarland is not done making moves before the deadline.
Tsitsipas ends skid in ATP 500 finals
Stefanos Tsitsipas secured his first ATP 500 title by beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-3 in the Dubai Championships final on Saturday. The 11th-ranked Tsitsipas lost all 11 previous finals he played in ATP 500 events — including in Dubai in 2019 and 2020 — but needed just under 90 minutes to claim his 12th career title and first of the year. “It’s a big relief that I’m able to hold that trophy after the third attempt,” said Tsitsipas, who lost to Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in his previous two Dubai finals. “It’s something that I had in the back of my mind, and I’m happy to say I accomplished it.” The Greek player won the last four games of the first set and then clinched the win with an ace on his first match point. Tsitsipas saved all seven break points he faced to improve to 7-3 against Auger-Aliassime. The victory will lift the Greek player back into the top 10 for the first time since May. No. 21-ranked Auger-Aliassime was seeking what would have been a tour-leading third win for 2025. He won in Adelaide and Montpellier this year.
Palace reaches FA Cup quarterfinals
Crystal Palace beat 10-man Millwall 3-1 in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday after visiting goalkeeper Liam Roberts was sent off early for kicking forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, pictured, in the face. Roberts’ wild attempt to make a clearance led to Mateta having to be carried off on a stretcher and taken to a hospital with a head injury, with Palace chairman Steve Parish describing it as “the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I’ve ever seen.” Roberts was sent off in the eighth minute, and Mateta remained on the ground for several minutes receiving medical treatment before he was fitted with a neck brace and carried off the field toward an ambulance. Palace took a 2-0 lead through an own goal by Japhet Tanganga and an easy tap-in from Daniel Munoz, but Millwall got back in the game when Wes Harding scored just before halftime. That came in the 14th minute of injury time. Striker Eddie Nketiah, who came on for Mateta, added the third with a looping header in the 81st to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. —Associated Press
