Saigo shot a 6-under 66 on Friday to take second-round lead at Erin Hills,
At 8-under 136, the 23-year-old Japanese player had a three-stroke advantage over a group of six led by top-ranked Nelly Korda.
Saigo won the Chevron Championship in a playoff outside Houston just over a month ago for her first LPGA Tour title.
Korda, who has never finished higher than a tie for eighth in the U.S. Women’s Open, had a 67. That’s the best round she’s had in the event. She was 5 under with Hinako Shibuno, Sarah Schmelzel, Maja Stark, Yealimi Noh and 2020 champion A Lim Kim.
Taylor shares lead with Griffin at the Memorial
Nick Taylor managed to play a relatively stress-free round of golf in rainy weather at the Memorial.
He putted for birdie on all but one hole and was bogey-free for a 68. That gives him a share of the lead with Ben Griffin, who had a 72.
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler managed just fine with a 70 that probably should have been lower. He was three behind.
Jordan Spieth had another wild par save and finished strong for 69 that left him four back.

Alvarez’s five-RBI night sinks Storm Chasers
Behind five RBI from Armando Alvarez, the Saints won their third straight game, topping host Omaha 9-8.
Saint Paul took the lead for good with a three-run eighth inning that included an RBI triple from Ryan Fitzgerald.
The Saints improved to 28-24 with the win. St. Paul takes on the Storm Chasers again at 6:05 p.m. today.

McCullers receiving online death threats
Houston’s Lance McCullers and his family have received online death threats this month.
The Astros contacted MLB security and the Houston Police Department following the threats to McCullers and an HPD spokesperson said that it remains an ongoing investigation.
McCullers, who has two young daughters, reached out to the team to inquire about providing security for his family. Astros owner Jim Crane stepped in and hired 24-hour security.
Smith-Shawver out for year with torn UCL
Atlanta Braves rookie right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver has a torn UCL in his pitching elbow.
Smith-Shawver left Thursday’s 5–4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in a doubleheader opener and said he felt a “pop.”
The 22-year-old was initially placed on the 15-day injured list before being moved to the 60-day IL.
Snitker said he didn’t know if Smith-Shawver would need Tommy John surgery.

49ers agree to acquire Huff from Eagles
The San Francisco 49ers have agreed on a deal to acquire Bryce Huff from Philadelphia after the pass rusher restructured his contract with the Eagles.
A person familiar with the situation said on condition of anonymity that the two sides agreed to the trade after Huff revised his contract. The trade can’t be completed until after June 1.
The teams were finalizing the deal for a Day 3 draft pick, saying the Eagles will pay about $9 million of Huff’s salary this season with the 49ers on the hook for nearly $8 million.

Pelicans’ Williamson sued by woman
Zion Williamson is being sued by a woman describing herself as a former dating partner and who alleges the New Orleans Pelicans star committed repeated sexual violence against her.
The civil lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court identifies the plaintiff as “Jane Doe.” She claims she began dating Williamson in 2018, when he played at Duke, and alleges that he engaged in abusive behavior until their relationship ended in 2023.

San Diego FC bans 33 fans after brawls
San Diego FC has issued indefinite bans to 33 people who apparently participated in a violent brawl with LA Galaxy supporters after the MLS rivals’ match at Snapdragon Stadium last weekend.
The club will work with law enforcement and MLS to enforce the bans.
A prolonged brawl broke out in the stands following San Diego’s 2-1 victory over the Galaxy last Saturday.

Olson promoted to associate head coach
Maddy Olson has been promoted to associate head coach of the Gophers’ swimming and diving team, director Kelly Kremer announced.
Olson recently finished her seventh season on the coaching staff and fourth working with the distance group. She has coached seven NCAA Qualifiers in the past two seasons alone, including All-Americans Bar Soloveychik, Eliot Kennedy and Megan Van Berkom.
