Farmington Hills woman, Novi man killed in crash on I-75 in Detroit

A multi-vehicle crash in Detroit on Sunday afternoon killed two passengers from Oakland County and injured several others, officials said.

According to Michigan State Police, a 50-year-old Novi man and a 56-year-old woman from Farmington Hills were killed in the crash that happened mid-afternoon on I-75 near Mack Avenue.

An on-scene investigation revealed the crash happened when the driver of a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria struck a 2021 Chevrolet Traverse that was slowing or stopped in the left lane of traffic, which forced the Traverse into a 2022 Kia Telluride. The Kia was then forced into a 2024 Jeep Wrangler, MSP stated on X.

The at-fault driver didn’t brake prior to the crash, MSP stated.

The Novi man who was killed was a passenger in the Crown Victoria. The Farmington Hills woman who was killed was a passenger in the Kia, MSP stated. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Other occupants in the vehicles suffered minor injuries, MSP stated.

“It is important for all drivers to remember that every time they get behind the wheel they are not only responsible for themselves and their passengers, but others that they share the road with as well,” MSP Lt. Mike Shaw stated. “Driving requires all of our attention, all of the time. Driving conditions can change in a split second and if drivers are not paying attention, it can be deadly.”

The investigation is ongoing, to include vehicle inspections, autopsy reports and reconstruction reports.

Once completed it will be submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
