ALLEN PARK >> The Detroit Lions want their offensive linemen to be versatile, and they’re wasting no time getting a couple of their rookies up to speed at multiple positions.

During the first day of rookie minicamp Friday, second-round pick Tate Ratledge was getting work in at both center and guard, and fifth-round selection Miles Frazier saw reps at guard and tackle. Players weren’t in pads, but the practice served as Detroit’s first on-field look at its rookies.

All 34 of Ratledge’s starts at Georgia came at right guard, but he saw some opportunity at center during fall camp with the Bulldogs last year. Frazier, meanwhile, played more than 900 snaps at both guard and tackle during his collegiate career, which included stops at Florida International and LSU. He played almost exclusively right guard with the Tigers from 2023-24, however, with the exception being one start at right tackle in LSU’s win over Baylor in the Texas Bowl last December.

“You gotta say a lot more,” Ratledge said of playing center. “You gotta know the safety rotation, stuff like that, know where the point’s going. At guard, most of the time you’re listening to the center tell you where to go. At center, like I said, you’re telling everybody else where to go.”

Frazier, who in addition to starting at RG was also LSU’s swing tackle last season, noted how things move faster the closer you get to the ball.

“At guard, everything happens way quicker,” Frazier said. “Even at center, everything happens real quicker. At tackle, you have to have a lot more patience and just more read and react (rather) than start the fight.”

In the lead-up to the draft, Ratledge and Frazier both spent time training with offensive line guru Duke Manyweather. That led to a friendship between them before they ended up as teammates: “Tate is my dog,” Frazier said. “Learning the plays together (and) being in the same room, I feel like we both could push each other.”

Numbers assigned but not locked in

Uniform numbers for Detroit’s rookies have been assigned but nothing is set in stone until Week 1.

And if it’s up to first-round defensive tackle Tyleik Williams, he won’t be donning No. 78 for long: “I tried to get 91, but it’s already taken (by Levi Onwuzurike),” he said Friday. “Hopefully, I can get out of 78. But for right now, 78, I’m going to stick with it and make it look good.

“For right now, that’s my number.”

Ratledge is No. 69 and Frazier is No. 71. Other draftees who received uniform numbers were wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa (No. 18), defensive end Ahmed Hassanein (No. 61), safety Dan Jackson (No. 28) and receiver Dominic Lovett (No. 19).

Lions ink four draft picks, 10 UDFAs

The Lions announced Friday they’ve signed four of their seven drafted rookies: Frazier, Hassanein, Jackson and Lovett. Terms of their deals were not disclosed, but non-first-round rookie contracts are four years in length. Those taken in the first round also get four years, though there’s an additional team option tacked onto the back of their pacts.

Williams, Ratledge and TeSlaa remain unsigned, but that’s not cause for any concern. It typically takes time for the Lions to come to terms on deals with all of their draft picks. Last year, then-rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold didn’t put pen to paper until the middle of June.

Detroit’s unsigned rookies are still participating in rookie minicamp, as is standard.

Also notable: The Lions announced the signings of 10 undrafted free agents, including tight ends Zach Horton (Indiana) and Caden Prieskorn (Ole Miss), wide receivers Jakobie Keeney-James (UMass) and Jackson Meeks (Syracuse), offensive linemen Leif Fautanu (Arizona State) and Mason Miller (North Dakota State), running backs Kye Robichaux (Boston College) and Anthony Tyus III (Ohio), cornerback Gavin Holmes and safety Ian Kennelly (Grand Valley State).

Keith Cooper Jr. (Houston) was reportedly set to join the Lions on a UDFA deal, but it turns out he’s instead one of the 19 players invited to Allen Park for a tryout. Others in the same boat include OT Bryce Benhart (Nebraska), WR Ahmarean Brown (South Carolina), TE Luke Deal (Auburn), DL Breiden Fehoko (LSU), LB Corey Flagg Jr. (Missouri), DL Trevis Gipson (Tulsa), S Aamir Hall (Michigan), FB Duane Martin (Louisville), CB Tavian Montgomery (Central Connecticut State), CB Naim Muhammad (Kent State), CB Duke Shelley (Kansas State), CB Isaiah Rutherford (UMass), QB Cole Snyder (Eastern Michigan), DL Corey Suttle (Miami of Ohio), WR Malik Taylor (Ferris State) and DL Raequan Williams (Michigan State).
