Resident of Point Richmond
We lost a compassionate man with an inquisitive mind, Dr. Ben Meek, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend. He was loved by many people who appreciated his gentle spirit, wit, sense of humor, and non judgmental approach to all.
Born on March 30th 1949, he was raised in Louisville Kentucky and Miami, attending Archbishop Curely-Notre Dame H.S. He attended The University of Miami and University of Miami Medical school, graduating in 1978.
In 1979, Ben moved toSan Francisco and fell in love with the Bay Area while working on his Surgical Internship at UCSF/ Mt. Zion. During this time he became a member of the Western Emergency Physicians.
Ben then joined International Medical Teams as Chief of Field Medicine in 1980. He volunteered with refugees on the Thai-Cambodian border during the early and catastrophic days of the Pol Pot Regime, inspiring his lifelong devotion to emergency medicine and travel.
When he returned to the United States Ben joined the Eden Emergency Medical Group, where he worked in the Emergency Department for 30 years. He served on several committees as well as on the board of directors.
Ben was a student of the Universe, forever interested in how it worked. He loved science, past, present and future and was excited by its possibilities. He was an ardent reader who loved to have lively debates and conversations.
He developed lifelong friendships & was a loyal &supportive brother to his friends &Men’s Group.
Ben shared his life, love, and heart with his creative wife Judy for 40 years. He was Judy’s biggest supporter, being the first and last at her art exhibitions, always proud of her talents. Together they filled their home with art, laughter, warmth and their beloved cats. They complimented each other, and the happiness they shared radiated within them.
Ben fought a brave battle with mantle cell lymphoma, passing on 12/09/24 at home in the company of loved ones. He never lost the twinkle inhis eyes and kept his spirit through the end, though his journey continues.
He is survived by his wife Judy Rattner, his sister Maria Huson, brother in law John Huson and their five children, as well as many grand nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of life will be held on March 9th at Northbrae Community Church in Berkeley. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to World Central Kitchen, Planned Parenthood, or a charity of your choice.
