ABINGTON >> When she had a pitch called for a questionable ball early in her outing, Alyx Rossi assumed she might be in for a long day Tuesday.
Au contraire. The Boston College softball commit put on a performance for the ages, firing a one-hit shutout with four walks while finishing with a ridiculous 26 strikeouts in the circle as Bedford (6-1) knocked off Abington in 10 innings, 2-0.
“I think I overcame the adversity,” Rossi said with a laugh. “(The umpire) didn’t like the outside of the plate a lot in the beginning. Then he opened it up towards the end. But seeing bunts is definitely tough as a pitcher. Attacking that, I think I did a good job pitching at the bat, rather than pitching around it.”
When two of the top pitchers in Eastern Mass. face off, a classic is possible. The script followed as expected, with some hurdles for both aces to start. Rossi would strand an Abington runner in scoring position in the first inning. She found a rhythm in the second, striking out the side to send the game into the third scoreless.
Meanwhile, Abington (5-1) star Elsie Testa fired a gem of her own, forcing easy outs via contact as the teams carried on into the later innings 0-0.
The chess match would continue. Rossi continued to deal, striking out the side in the fifth and sixth frames.
Abington had a chance to walk things off in the bottom of the seventh, as Ella Franey reached on a bunt single. Yet, Rossi escaped the jam, slamming the door shut with a strikeout to send the game into extra innings.
The senior saved her best for last.
With the game hanging in the balance during the eighth and ninth innings, fans were left stunned as Rossi struck out the side again in each instance.
“No, I have not (seen a performance like that),” said Bedford coach Dennis Walsh. “You think of the situation, and you almost can’t have that many (strikeouts), unless it goes to extras. Wow.”
Bedford finally had a chance to take a lead with a runner on third in the top half of the 10th, and was able to capitalize as Kate Patterson roped a grounder toward short. The ball took a wicked hop, skipping past the fielder for an RBI single as the Bucs plated the game’s first run.
Bedford would extend its lead to 2-0, as a fielder’s choice at second allowed Patterson to score from third.
Needing three outs to seal the deal, Rossi closed things flawlessly. The ace struck out the side one more time for good measure, as her teammates sprinted to the circle to celebrate her latest, and arguably greatest feat.
Testa fired a complete game for Abington, surrendering just two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out nine.
“A lot of times, I don’t like the zone that I’m given in the beginning,” said Rossi. “So I think it was about getting comfortable with what I was going to get, and eating those bad calls. Being able to adapt and move forward.”
