Spencer Carbery of the Washington Capitals has won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year.

The league announced the honor Saturday after members of Carbery’s family surprised him with the trophy earlier in the week. Carbery is the first person to be named coach of the year in the NHL, American Hockey League and ECHL.

Carbery was a runaway winner of the Jack Adams as voted on by the league’s broadcasters, receiving 81 of 103 first-place votes. Winnipeg’s Scott Arniel was second and Montreal’s Martin St. Louis a distant third.

In his second season running an NHL bench, Carbery guided Washington to first place in the Eastern Conference.

Grizzlies’ Edey undergoes surgery >> Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey has sprained his left ankle again and the team said that the All-Rookie team selection will need surgery.

The Grizzlies said the 7-foot-3 Edey was working out this week when he injured the ankle again. Imaging revealed excessive ligamentous laxity, which will be addressed with surgery that will also restabilize his ankle.

The two-time national player of the year at Purdue missed 12 games early in the season because of a sprained left ankle. He went on to play in 66 games, making 55 starts, and averaged 9.2 points and a rookie-leading 8.3 rebounds.

MLB

Tigers’ prospect hurt >> Detroit Tigers infield prospect Bryce Rainer will have season-ending shoulder surgery after an injury earlier this week.

Rainer dislocated his right shoulder diving back into first base while playing for Class-A Lakeland in the Florida State League. After he saw multiple doctors, the decision was made for him to have surgery. The Tigers announced he is expected to be ready for spring training in 2026.

Phillies’ Harper placed on IL >> The scuffling Philadelphia Phillies suffered a blow when they placed first baseman Bryce Harper on the 10-day injured list because of right wrist inflammation before their game against the Pirates.

Harper sat out Friday night’s 5-4 loss to Pittsburgh. The move is retroactive to Friday.

The two-time National League MVP and eight-time All-Star is hitting .258 with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 57 games. He missed five games from May 26 to June 2 with a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch from Atlanta’s Spencer Strider.

Lee holds 1-shot lead at ShopRite LPGA Classic >> Ilhee Lee shot a 3-under 68 in the ShopRite LPGA Classic in a round delayed by rain in the afternoon to take a one-stroke lead over four players into the final round.

Tied for the first-round lead with Elizabeth Szokol after a 63, Lee rebounded from a double bogey on the par-4 eighth with a closing birdie on the par-5 ninth. The 36-year-old South Korean player had an 11-under 131 total on Seaview’s Bay Course.

She won the 2013 Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic for her lone tour title.

Racing

Briscoe takes pole >> Chase Briscoe won his third straight pole and NASCAR -high fourth this year at Michigan International Speedway.

Briscoe, driving the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, turned a lap of 195.514 mph in qualifying on the 2-mile oval in the fastest pole in the Cup Series since Ryan Blaney went 200-plus mph at Texas in 2018.

He is aiming for his first win this year after five top-five finishes.

Lamborun wins English Derby >> Lambourn raced away from the pack to win the English Derby, giving Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien his 11th win at the classic race.

Lambourn set the pace early and then pulled away down the final stretch to win by about 31/2 lenghts. The 3-year-old colt, ridden by Wayne Lordan, entered the race at 13-2 after losing to 2-1 favorite Delacroix at Leopardstown in March.
