Mets: Pitcher Carlos Carrasco is expected to miss up to a month after straining his left oblique, the Mets announced Tuesday in another setback for its rotation. The 35-year-old Carrasco, 13-5 with a 3.92 ERA in a resurgement season for the NL East leaders, was hurt Monday night in a game against the Braves. The Mets said Carrasco had an MRI that showed a low-grade strain on the left side. The club said a typical timeline for this sort of injury was three to four weeks. Carrasco gave up three runs in two innings in a 13-1 loss to the Braves, who trailed the Mets by 4 1/2 games in the division. His outing was interrupted by a 55-minute rain delay in the second inning — he came back after the break and got the last out, but winced on his final pitch and was pulled. “We’re just going to wait to see how I feel tomorrow and go from there,” Carrasco said after the game. “This is my first time that I’ve felt something like this. It just happened on the last pitch of the game.” Carrasco had been 5-0 with a 1.69 ERA in his previous seven starts. Acquired with star shortstop Francisco Lindor in a trade with the Guardians before the 2021 season, Carrasco was injured and went 1-5 in his first year with the Mets.

Red Sox: INF/OF Kiké Hernández returned to the Red Sox on Tuesday after a more than a two-month absence as he was activated from the 15-day injured list. Hernández had been out with June 8 with a strained right hip flexor. He revealed before the Red Sox’s game against the Pirates that he also had an internal hematoma in an abdominal muscle on his right side drained in June. “I’ve never missed that much time in my career and I kind of felt like I wasn’t part of the team in a way,” said Hernández, who started at shortstop Tuesday. Xander Bogaerts was rested after fouling a ball off his right foot during a weekend series with the Yankees. At the time he went on the IL, Hernández was hitting .209 with four HRs in 51 games. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he will use Hernández at both middle infield spots as well as center fielder. Hernández was the Red Sox’s primary center fielder last season and hit 20 HRs when they reached the AL Championship Series before losing to the Astros.

Pirates: INF Rodolfo Castro was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for having a cellphone in his back pocket during an Aug. 9 game against the Diamondbacks. Castro was ruled by MLB to have violated its electronic device policy by having the cellphone in his pocket. Castro is appealing the suspension. Castro’s phone popped out of his pocket when he slid into third base during the game against the D’backs. It was his first game back in the majors for his second stint with the Pirates this season. He said after the game that it was unintentional.

Athletics: OF Stephen Piscotty, 31, was released, clearing the way for top prospect Shea Langeliers to gain experience down the stretch for the last-place team in the AL West. Langeliers, a 24-year-old catcher and left fielder selected ninth overall in the 2019 draft, hit .283 with 19 HRs and 56 RBIs in 92 games for Triple-A Las Vegas after being acquired from the Braves in the March trade that sent Matt Olson to the defending World Series champs.
