Four players from Walled Lake Northern and a trio from Stoney Creek were among the county representatives who collected Division 1 all-state softball honors from the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association.
Both aforementioned programs had a pair who earned first-team nods.
Walled Lake Northern, regional champions this season, had first baseman Katelyn Stallings, and pitcher Lyla Turmell, who allowed just one run over seven innings in the Knights’ 2-1 victory to win regionals.
From Stoney, it was shortstop Kate Stephens, along with utility player Allie Ray, the Cougars’ all-state freshman. Ray earned the victory in the Cougars’ 11-10 district win over Adams, and combined with Stephens for a handful of hits in that victory, along with three RBIs.
Outfielder MaKenna Kresbaugh and second baseman Shaela Byrnes from Walled Lake Northern and third baseman Danielle Bryant from Stoney were the honorable mentions from the schools.
The OAA and LVC had other picks as well. Bloomfield Hills outfielder Anna Carlson was named to the D1 first team. She led the Black Hawks in average (.635) home runs (20) and RBIs (82). From Milford, shortstop Marisa Merz was a first-team pick, too, and drove in a pair of her team’s three runs in the Mavs final game of the season.
Finally, Mercy senior Kaitlyn Pallozzi was a first-team selection. The stats tell the story with Pallozzi, one of the state’s most dominant pitchers. In 28 appearances on the mound, she was 23-1 with a miniscule 0.18 ERA in 152 innings pitched. On the season, she boasted an absurd 0.055 batting average against with 363 strikeouts.
From the Marlins, Pallozzi’s catcher, Evelyn Miller (.462 BA), was among the local honorable mentions. Also recognized in that fashion were Lakeland outfielder Brynn Taliercio, and the Lake Orion duo of pitcher Rylee Limberger and DP Lilly Martin.
South Lyon, despite reaching the D1 final, did not have a player make the list.
DIVISION 2
Orchard Lake St. Mary’s had a pair of first-team selections from its district championship side.
Outfielder Madison Anson and second baseman Mia Tribul were the county’s lone first-team nods at the D2 level. Both had a pair of home runs in the team’s playoff opener, then Anson homered twice and Tribul added another in the district title victory for the Eaglets back on May 31.
Likewise, the D2 honorable mentions both came from the same school. Outfielder Katherine Healy and shortstop Emersyn Rix-Renne were recognized from Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. Rix-Renne, a junior, doubled off the fence to drive in the lone Irish run in its district opener, while Healy, a center fielder, was one of just three seniors on this year’s 22-win ND Prep team.
DIVISION 3
First baseman Abigail Jones of Bishop Foley and pitcher Sarah McLeod of Clawson were both D3 first-team selections.
From the Ventures, Jones was an on-base machine, hitting .511 with 23 stolen bases, both team highs, along with 36 runs and 18 RBIs.
The Trojans’ workhorse on the mound, McLeod went 20-4 in 26 appearances. She sported a 1.85 ERA and just a .212 BAA with 225 Ks over 151 1/3 innings.
Utility player Sasha Walker (2.20 ERA in 95 1/3 IP; .500 BA, 45 RBIs) also grabbed honorable mention plaudits from Bishop Foley. As a pitcher, Wixom St. Catherine’s Soseh Broglin was also an honorable mention. In the Stars’ district championship win, she struck out nine batters in three innings, along with going 4-for-4 with five RBIs.
