Once again, the Colorado women’s soccer team dialed up some second half magic. And once again it was Ava Priest who provided the spark.

The 18th-ranked Buffaloes scored twice in the second half, with Priest getting CU on the board in the 57th minute, as CU topped Weber State 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field. It was the final nonconference game for the Buffs, who will take a five-game win streak into Thursday’s Big 12 Conference opener at Kansas State (6 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

Priest, the Boulder native who also scored the winning goal late in Thursday’s 1-0 home win against Denver, has scored goals in consecutive games for the first time in her career and already has matched the two goals she scored in 21 games last year as a freshman.

“I thought we played well,” CU head coach Danny Sanchez said in a release. “We created a ton of chances. They didn’t all fall for us today, but I’m really pleased with how we played, how we attacked and our mentality. It was a good win for us. Obviously, we would like to have maybe made it a little easier on ourselves, but at the end of the day, 2-0 is a great result.”

After a scoreless first half, Priest was the beneficiary of some nifty passing from Michaela Rosenbaum and Juliauna Hayward before beating Weber State goalie Hadley Harris. Both Rosenbaum and Hayward were credited with assists, with Rosenbaum, a graduate transfer from UCLA, earning her first point with the Buffs.

CU (6-1) added a key insurance goal in the 87th minute, as Hope Leyba was able to outrace Harris to a lead pass from Claire Curran before converting her fourth goal of the season.

The Buffs outshot Weber State 25-13 with a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. CU goalie Jordan Nytes recorded four saves to post her fourth consecutive shutout and her fifth of the season. It was Nytes’ 13th shutout with CU, moving into a tie for sixth in program history with Kara Linder.

Nytes extended her scoreless streak to 429 minutes, 11 seconds.

The Buffs played without leading goal-scorer Shyra James, who was sidelined due to injury.

“We know this team [Weber State] would come to play,” Hope Leyba said. “We knew they were athletic and we had to match it. It’s hard on Sunday sometimes to get yourself going, but the hard work we put in really matters. We had good soccer as a team, and ultimately, we scored two goals and won the game.”
