UC Santa Cruz to host Harvest Festival

The 2024 Harvest Festival will feature live music, an apple pie bake-off, kids’ activities, pumpkins for sale, delicious food, and more 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19, at the UCSC Farm, Farm Road, Santa Cruz.

Admission is $5, with free admission for kids under 12, UCSC, Hartnell College, and Cabrillo College students with a student ID, Semillas program families, and Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden members. Go to calendar.ucsc.edu/event/harvest-festival to preregister.

Bicycling, carpooling, ridesharing and public transportation are encouraged as parking is limited. If you drive to the event, plan to park in UCSC Lot No. 104 (East Remote parking lot) and walk or take a complimentary shuttle to the farm. There will be directional signage to help you get to the correct parking lot and farm entrances.

Bring a reusable water bottle to save plastic and stay hydrated. Pets are not allowed on the UC Santa Cruz campus (with the exception of service animals).

Benefit dance concert at Senior Center

The Mid-County Senior Center will be hosting a benefit dance and concert featuring the Country Feeling Band from 7-9 p.m. Friday at 829 Bay Ave., Capitola.

Tickets are $10 per person and everyone 18 and older is welcome to attend and participate in the dances. Shanta Shenoy will teach a country line dance class at 6 p.m. for no additional charge. Mid County Senior Center provides a variety of programs and activities for the local community.

Wild Roots Market in Felton has chosen Felton Library Friends for Community Roots Day on Wednesday. Wild Roots supports local nonprofit organizations by donating 5% of the day’s sales. Felton Library Friends will have an information table and book sales cart table in front of the store. All proceeds will go to support enhancements to the Felton Branch Library and the Felton Discovery Park. Wild Roots Market is at 6240 Highway 9, Felton, and is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

City to host Domestic Violence Awareness art exhibit

The city of Santa Cruz’s Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women in collaboration with Monarch Services will host the Domestic Violence Awareness Month Art Exhibition and Reception from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at The Old Wrigley Building, 2857 Mission Street, Santa Cruz.

The event will showcase the artistic talent of youth and adults in the community, featuring submissions that express the resilience, strength, and hope of survivors of domestic violence. The art pieces include featured submissions from survivors in the community, participants in Monarch Services programming, students from Soquel High School and the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, and supportive community members.

Attendees will enjoy an array of youth and adult art submissions, a guest speaker, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages. The exhibition aims to create a space for reflection, support, and solidarity with those impacted by domestic violence.

Writers of Color event coming to MAH

Join Writers of Color for a free evening of poetry and music at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History, 705 Front St., Santa Cruz, 6-9 p.m. Thursday.

The event features Farnaz Fatemi, the Santa Cruz County poet laureate, and the corridos of Bob Gómez, the Watsonville poet laureate. Writers of Color-Santa Cruz County members will also be on hand to share their stories. Go to santacruzmah.org for information and to sign up.

City to host paper, pumpkin recycling event

Residents of the city of Santa Cruz will be welcomed to bring confidential paper documents to be shredded and pumpkins to be recycled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 9 at the City Hall parking lot, 809 Center St., Santa Cruz.

Each person is allowed a maximum of three banker-size boxes (12 inches by 10 inches by 15 inches) or three brown paper bags of equivalent size of confidential paper documents. Documents are shredded at the event and then taken to a facility for recycling. Pumpkins will be processed through the city’s Food Scrap Collection Program.

The event is only for residents of the city of Santa Cruz and participants will be asked for proof of residency. Note that the event may end before 1 p.m. if the shredding trucks reach capacity.

Local History Research Roundtable

Local history research group, Researchers Anonymous, will hold an online roundtable discussion at 10 a.m., Saturday. Participants will have the opportunity to share their current local history projects, provide feedback, and help one another with their work. The public is invited to attend.
