Lafayette City Administrator Fritz Sprague will step down from his position after serving the city for over four years.

Sprague began working as city administrator for the city in February 2019. In a news release Tuesday, Sprague stated he will be stepping down from his position to focus on his health.

He said that he has been transparent with city staff and council about his health and now feels it is time to move on from his position to “explore the next chapter” of his life.

Sprague’s last day in office will be May 1. Communications Director Debbie Wilmot said that an interim city administrator will be discussed and announced during the May 2 City Council meeting.

Sprague negotiated the Global Settlement Agreement between Lafayette and Erie, which sets guidelines for numerous development and infrastructural issues on the cities’ shared boundaries.

Sprague also led the acquisition of open spaces like the Waneka Centennial Farm, as well as the entitlement process of Lafayette Medtronic Campus, one of the biggest private-sector employers in Boulder County.

“So many things occurred in such a compressed timeframe, yet we were able to get the right people in the right places to make big things happen,” Sprague said in the release.

The release also stated that Sprague is credited for raising the bar for city performance, and investing in training, education, equity, diversity, and inclusivity.

He also helped to navigate the city through COVID challenges and having no service reductions or employee layoffs during the pandemic.

Lafayette City Council expressed in the release that members are appreciative of Sprague’s work and guidance.

“We feel fortunate to have had his conscientious insight for the past four years and wish him well. He will be missed,” the council said in a statement.

Sprague has worked for several municipalities in Colorado, Florida and Michigan over the last 30 years.

He plans to continue living in Lafayette after his departure from the city administrator role.
