It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of Jim Cheng, who passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025. Jim was born in Chaiyi, Taiwan and studied electrical engineering at National Cheng Kung University and North Dakota State University. He worked as a logic design engineer for Control Data in Minnesota and Maryland before taking anew job at ROLM in Silicon Valley, where he helped develop some of the first digital voicemail and telecom switching systems.

Jim is survived by his wife, Tracy (Tsuey Sang) Wu, his former wife, Nancy Cheng, his three sons –Ed, Robert, and David, his seven grandchildren – Ethan, Jasper, Sam, Andrew, Abby, River and Wilder, and his sister, Lie Chenn Lin. He was preceded in death by his brother, Chin Kuo Cheng.

Jim instilled in all three of his sons the values of community involvement, athletic excellence, and academic achievement. He was an avid tennis player, and played regularly with his friends. Jim was also a fierce supporter of Taiwanese independence, and worked to promote Taiwanese-American cultural understanding as a member and officer of the Taiwanese Alliance for Interculture.
