Following a week that saw sporadic light rain and some heavier showers across the Bay Area, today and Saturday are expected to see a reprieve from precipitation before the chance of rain returns Sunday.

The possibility of rain during the weekend will be highest in the North Bay, where chances range up from 50% to 70%. In the East Bay and South Bay, the precipitation chance will be between 20% and 40% in the morning and peak around 50% in the afternoon, said Lamont Bain, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

The chance of rain will be paired with cool temperatures; a cold front entered the Bay Area on Thursday and is expected to settle in today, said Nicole Sarment, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Thursday saw the day begin with clear blue skies in much of the region, with clouds drifting in by midday and showers opening up over parts of the East Bay by afternoon.

Across the Bay Area today, highs will sit in the 50s and 60s, Bain said.

“Overall, it’s going to be … a little chilly on Friday, and especially with the cloud cover,” Bain said. “Saturday may actually end up being a pretty decent day, albeit a little chilly.”

“We’re not expecting much in the way of clouds,” Bain added.

The East Bay and South Bay regions still can expect light rainfall, but not as much as is expected in the North Bay, Sarment said. The East Bay has a “somewhat better chance,” but still should not expect more than a few hundredths of an inch, she added.

The highest elevations in the North Bay can expect to see the most precipitation, Sarment said, with rainfall up to a quarter of an inch.

On Sunday, the cloud cover is expected to build back up as temperatures hold in the 50s and 60s, Bain said.

“Night low temperatures are probably going to be probably some of the colder conditions that we’ve seen since earlier this year, especially across the North Bay,” Bain said. “In the morning time, (people) probably will want to have a jacket.”

In San Jose, the forecast was for skies to dry up today and Saturday, Sarment said. There will be another chance for rain Sunday afternoon and into Monday morning.

All rainfall likely will yield “very light totals,” Sarment said.

The rain will be paired with cool temperatures in the low to mid-60s and lows in the mid 40s through the weekend, Sarment said. Tonight is slated to be the coolest, with the low dipping to about 40 degrees in San Jose.

East Bay temperatures also are dipping down with the incoming cold front. In Oakland, highs will sit in the mid-60s, with lows in the low to mid- 40s through the weekend, Sarment said.

Inland, Pleasanton will see the “same story with the rain,” paired with highs in the low 60s through the weekend and lows dipping into the high 30s tonight.

Other nights can expect lows in the low 40s.

“The interior East Bay will be the coldest, like near the Altamont Pass,” Sarment added. In Walnut Creek, highs will sit in the low 60s and lows will also dip into the high 30s to low 40s, she said.

Across the bay in San Francisco, residents also can expect light rainfall and cool temperatures, with the highs in the low 60s and the lows in the mid- 40s to low 50s.

Along the coast, a high- surf advisory and coastal flood advisory both remain in effect, Sarment said. The surf advisory was set through 11 a.m. Saturday, and the coastal flood advisory is scheduled to last until 4 p.m. Monday.

“Use caution if you’re going to the beach through the weekend, and then expect some minor coastal flooding in bayside areas,” Sarment added.

Bain added that people with plants that are sensitive to cold conditions may want to tend to them. He also mentioned that people living in the North Bay may want to winterize their property as temperatures may hit a low around freezing.
