Amazon will release a new documentary about Melania Trump on its Prime Video streaming service, the company said Sunday. Directed by Brett Ratner and executive produced by Trump herself, the film will give viewers an “unprecedented behind-the-scenes look” at the former first lady’s life, Amazon spokesperson Jenna Klein said in statement.
The announcement comes as Donald Trump prepares to take the oath of office and amid mounting public scrutiny about Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s relationship to the incoming president. (Bezos also owns The Washington Post.)
Bezos has said he is optimistic about the second Trump term and donated $1 million to the incoming president’s inauguration fund through Amazon.
Filming is already underway for the project, which is set to be released later this year. Neither Melania nor Donald Trump have commented on the documentary yet. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The film announcement follows Melania Trump’s best-selling memoir, “Melania,” which was released in October — about a month before Donald Trump won the presidency.
Unlike her husband, Melania Trump had notably withdrawn from the public eye following her at-times controversial tenure as first lady. Her memoir chronicled a few of those episodes, and looked back on her career as a model and her marriage to Donald Trump.
Bezos’s relationship to Trump, meanwhile, has attracted even more scrutiny since The Washington Post, under his direction, withdrew a planned editorial endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris. Recently the tech billionaire, whose businesses have becoming increasingly intertwined with the U.S. government, met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, along with Elon Musk. Amazon Prime also appears to be leaning into more political programming: In November, the streaming service aired live election night coverage.
The Melania Trump documentary is the first directing project for Ratner since 2015’s “Breakthrough,” a docuseries about science and technology. Ratner is best known for helming the “Rush Hour” movies and producing the “The Revenant,” which won several Academy Awards, including best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. In 2017, Ratner was accused by six women, including actor Olivia Munn, of sexual misconduct and harassment; Ratner has denied the claims.
