WELLESLEY >> Caitlyn Naughton, Jenna Wong and their Walpole teammates were tired of finishing second and they went out and did something about it Friday night.

The senior captains tied for a team-high with four goals apiece, as the second-seeded Timberwolves captured the program’s first Div. 2 girls lacrosse title with a wild 16-11 victory over No. 4 Reading at Babson College.

“It feels so unreal,” Wong said. “We worked really hard all season, and we knew this was it. All the girls, this year we knew it was going to be different. The girls are super close. We just felt like we had it in us to pull through, and come out with the first Walpole championship.”

Prior to Saturday, Walpole had reached a girls lacrosse final four other times since 2016, coming up short in each instance, including last year. After falling behind 1-0 early, the Timberwolves (25-1) responded with a vengeance by scoring the game’s next six goals. Naughton would net two tallies during the run, while Wong buried a shot with 11:47 to play in the half as Walpole pulled ahead, 6-1.

However, no lead is safe against Reading, which had just knocked off the state’s top-ranked team. The Rockets (21-4) proved why by staging an epic rally. Lily Rodgers, Molly Trahan and Abby Shanahan each found twine in the waning minutes of the second quarter, as the Rockets cut it to a 6-4 game at intermission.

Then, Rodgers kept fueling the Rockets to open the third, scoring two more goals. Meanwhile, Libby Quinn found the net as well, helping Reading draw even in stunning fashion at 7-all with 8:15 to play in the frame. Instantly, coach Mike Tosone burned a timeout for the Timberwolves.

“I thought we were playing pretty darn well,” Tosone said. “Except, they had gotten a couple of fast break goals against us, which rarely happened this year, all year-long because we are so fast. We made a little tweak in our ride in an effort to maybe not let that happen anymore. It didn’t.”

Then, Walpole came back to life by scoring four straight. Naughton converted a free position shot, before Wong, Emily Hagan and Ava MacLean followed suit with goals. In a flash, the Timberwolves were cruising with an 11-7 lead. They never looked back.

MacLean finished with four goals to propel Walpole, while Hagan and Riley Halloran added two goals each.

Rodgers and Trahan each registered a hat trick for Reading.

“This program has worked so hard to be here,” said Naughton. “Every single person, every single year. Honestly, it’s amazing. Coach deserves this more than anyone, and we all deserve this so much. We’ve been putting so much work into this, and we finally got it.”
