Santa Cruz High’s softball team held a five-run lead through four innings and held on for a 7-6 win over San Lorenzo Valley in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League action Wednesday.

Tezdyn Medina-Mates had three hits, two RBI, and scored twice for the Cardinals (5-5, 3-0). Molly Pisciotta had three hits, one RBI, and scored twice.

Ellia Dunton and Leah Serna each had two hits and one RBI. Dunton also scored a run.

Abi Krepelka had two hits, one RBI, and scored twice for the Cougars. Ray Alvarez and Bailey Filice each had two hits and two RBI. Filice also scored a run. Elie Colby had three hits and scored a run.

Rona Lewis earned a complete-game win. She gave up 11 hits, one walk, and six runs, only one was earned, and finished with eight strikeouts.

On Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Santa Cruz plays at Aptos, while SLV plays at Scotts Valley.

Salinas 12, at Watsonville 1; 5 inn. >> Mia Espinoza hit a solo home run for the Wildcatz in their Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division loss Wednesday.

Layla Romero had the Wildcatz’s only other hit.

Gigi Rossi had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI for the Cowboys (5-3, 1-0).

Watsonville (8-3, 0-1) hosts Monterey (7-1-1, 1-0) on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

At Marina 20, Pajaro Valley 9 >> Sophomore Hemeria Delatorre had two hits, including a home run, four RBI, and scored twice in the Grizzlies’ PCAL Cypress Division loss Wednesday.

The Grizzlies had four hits, drew 13 walks, and stole 16 bases.

Virginia Escobar had a hit, drew two walks, stole four bases, and scored three runs for the Grizzlies (), and Nate Carbajal drew three walks, stole two bases, and scored three runs.

Soquel 4, at Scotts Valley 2 >> Jake Escalante had a home run and two RBI, and the Knights scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for the SCCAL win Wednesday.

Gabe Virgallito doubled twice, stole two bases, and scored a run for the Knights (12-1, 2-1). Noah Piona had two hits, including a double, and one RBI.

Owen Martin had two hits, one walk, and scored twice for the Falcons (5-8, 1-2).

Sophomore Luke Shoemaker pitched three innings of scoreless relief and earned the win.

On Friday at 4 p.m., Soquel hosts Harbor (11-2, 3-1), while Scotts Valley hosts SLV (1-9, 0-4).

At Santa Cruz 11, SLV 1 >> Fernando DaCosta doubled twice, drew a walk, had four RBI, and scored a run in the Cardinals’ SCCAL win Wednesday.

Cameron Fusari had two hits, including a home run, three RBI, and scored a run for the Cardinals (5-2, 4-0). Damos Deworken had two hits and scored twice, and Seth Jin had a hit and scored twice.

Larrabee Mitchell had a walk, two hits, and scored a run for the Cougars (1-9, 0-4).

Winning pitcher Owen Rogers gave up three walks and two hits over five shutout innings, He struck out six batters.On Friday at 4 p.m., Santa Cuz hosts Aptos (3-7, 1-3), while SLV plays at Scotts Valley (5-8, 1-2).

Harbor 9, at Aptos 1 >> Cole McCombs shined on the mound and in the batter’s box to help the Pirates win their SCCAL game Wednesday.

McCombs, the winning pitcher, gave up two hits and two walks over six innings and recorded seven strikeouts. On offense, he had four hits, including a double, and three RBIs.

Liam Nunes and Naiche Fish each had two hits and scored a run for the Pirates (11-2, 3-1). Noah Solano doubled and had two RBI.

Isaiah Work hit an RBI double for the Mariners (3-7, 1-3). Cole McGillicuddy walked and scored Aptos’ lone run. Freshman Damien Espinoza had two hits.

On Friday at 4 p.m., Harbor plays at Soquel (12-1, 2-1), while Aptos plays at Santa Cruz (5-2, 4-0).

At Greenfield 7, MVC 5 >> The Mustangs suffered their first loss in PCAL Mission Division play Wednesday.

Danny Nava had four hits, two RBI, and scored twice for the Bruins.

Soquel 7, Scotts Valley 0 >> Hudson Ward, Benja Bellito, Cian Francis, and Leo Hagedorn earned singles wins in straight sets in the Knights’ SCCAL sweep Wednesday.

Colby Negro and Americo Castillo won at No. 1 doubles for the Knights (4-0).

Scotts Valley forfeited No. 2 and 3 doubles.

Boys volleyball

Santa Cruz 3, Saint Francis (Mountain View) 1 >> The Cardinals rallied a 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 win in nonleague action Wednesday.

Gammon Nilssen managed to close it out the second set with some big hits, Matty Rayray served out the final four points of the third set, and Lucas Kamalani had several digs, and Julien Pally, Nilssen and Rayray continued to cause problems in the opponent’s passing line in the fourth set.

Beach volleyball

Santa Cruz 3, Scotts Valley 2 >> The Cardinals won match Nos. 3 through 5 in their SCCAL win Wednesday.

No. 3 Clara Bay Marinelli-Watkins and Colette Huynh, No. 4 Chloe Schantz and Lovella Jones, and No. 5 Eliana Russell and Olivia Beck-Watts won for the Cardinals in straight sets.

The Falcons’ Hayden Smith and Aila Papapoulos beat Natalie Monroe and Shelby Leonardich 18-31,21-18,15-11 at No. 1, and Makayla McDonnell and Rylee Giesen beat Brooke Alden and Shasta Butler 20-22, 21-18, 15-11 at No. 2.

Boys track and field

Watsonville 110, at Rancho San Juan 20 >> Senior Gerardo Acosta-Perez and freshman Noel Navarro each won three individual events in the Wildcatz’s dual meet win Wednesday.

Acosta-Perez took first in the 110 hurdles, 19.00), high jump (5-0), and pole vault (10-0), and Navarro took first in the 100 (12.23), 200 (25.37), and 300 hurdles (50.28).

Wildcatz sophomore Nain Garcia-Ferria took first in the 800 (2:11.97) and 1,600 (4:45.74).

Watsonville also took first in the 4×100 relay (48.71) and earned wins from juniors Alex Zaragoza (400, 57.66), Desi Salinas-Holz (3,200; 10:53.49), and Lisandro Pantoja (discus, 153-5), and sophomore Mark Flores (triple jump, 35-5). Sophomore Damien Amado Villarruel (5-0) tied Acosta-Perez in the high jump.

Cluster meet at MVC >> The Mustangs took first in six events in their PCAL cluster meet in Watsonville on Wednesday.

The Mustangs took first in the 4×100 relay (45.50) and 4×400 relay (3:42.52), and earned wins from seniors Joshua Tepoorten (400, 52.22) and Aiden Lopes (110 hurdles, 19.53), and juniors Conor Gilliam (800, 2:09.95) and Go Kamashita (triple jump, 39-0).

Girls track and field

Watsonville 91, at Rancho San Juan 42: S >> enior Katelynn Ruiz took first in the 400 (1:10.02) and 1,600 (6:10.26) in the Wildcatz’s dual meet win Wednesday.

The Wildcatz also won the 4×400 relay (4:46.64) and earned wins from senior Jayleen Arredondo (100 hurdles, 20.49), juniors Azucena Sandoval (800, 2:41.57) and Lizbeth Gomez Abrica (3,200; 15:05.73), and sophomores Paloma Campos (300 hurdles, 1:03.16) and Brianna Vanegas (triple jump, 29-7.25).

Freshman Kimberly Hernandez and senior Brianna Reyes tied for first in the high jump (4-0).

Cluster meet at MVC >> Senior Madison Bandy and freshmen Anna Conca and Norah Rondia each won two individual events in the Mustangs’ PCAL cluster meet on Wednesday.

Bandy took first in the 100 (13.41) and 200 (28.05), Conca took first in the 800 (2:36.02) and 1,600 (5:21.06), and Rondia took first in the 100 hurdles (18.51) and 300 hurdles (55.67).

MVC also took first in the 4×100 relay (53.68) and earned wins from senior Kylie Brunelli (3,200; 13:36.33) and sophomore Finley Castro (400, 1:04.07). Freshmen Gabby Telles and Eleanor Crane tied for first in the high jump (8-0).

Marheineke earns two wins >> Archbishop Mitty senior Evie Marheineke, a Santa Cruz resident who is committed to UCLA, won both the 800 (2:33.19) and 1,600 (5:16.38) in the Monarchs’ 68-all tie with St Ignatius on Wednesday.

College baseball

West Valley 14, at Cabrillo 8 >> Oscar Knapp had four hits, two RBI, and a run scored in the Seahawks’ Coast Conference South Division loss Wednesday.

Jacob Fiorenza had three hits, one RBI, and scored three runs for the Seahawks (10-19, 3-7). Kaiden Hoapili had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored. Truett Ross had two hits and one RBI, Carlos Cruz had a hit, two RBI, and a run scored. Diego Grabiel had two hits and two walks.

David Estrada had three hits, four RBI, and scored twice for the Vikings (24-6, 10-0).

Kyle Scritzky pitched two scoreless innings of relief and earned the win. Anthony Sullivan gave up five runs, three earned, over 1 1/3 innings of relief and took the loss.
