Friendly rivals William Freas of Tam High and Antonio Bayon of Redwood High stood on the podium together, finishing second and third, respectively, in the pole vault as the North Coast Section Track and Field Meet of Champions got underway Friday at Dublin High.

Freas punched his ticket to the CIF State Championships with his third attempt at 15 feet, 6 inches. Bayon cleared 14’2” on his last attempt. Pittsburg senior Khaliq Muhammad took first place with a record 17’1”.

San Marin senior Trenton Jepma placed seventh in the discus at 150’2”. Archie Williams High placed seventh in the 4×800 relay. Competition continues Saturday.

Girls track and field

The Branson School claimed second place in the 4×800 relay at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions on Friday at Dublin High. The Bulls’ listed team of Maya Gidney, Imogen Brown, Farah Allen and Hailey Sellers finished in 9 minutes, 14.07 seconds, just a fraction of a second behind the winners from Monte Vista.

Tam placed ninth in the 4×800 relay.

Redwood’s Annalise Horn finished sixth in the triple jump at 37 feet, 9.75 inches. The Giants’ Arlie Peterson tied for seventh in the high jump at 4’10”, with Marin Academy’s Esme Morrison tied for ninth at the same height. Competition continues Saturday.

Prep baseball

Sophomore Johnny Greco hit a three-run homer in the second inning to help power No. 6 Marin Catholic to a 11-4 victory over No. 14 Kelseyville in Friday’s North Coast Section Division IV quarterfinals. Greco added an RBI-single in the fifth inning.

The Wildcats (15-12) will face No. 10 Northgate (18-7) in the semifinals. Northgate was a 5-0 upset winner over No. 2 Piedmont (16-10).

Marin Catholic senior Jude Baker was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, while junior Cooper Mitchell was 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. The Wildcats took a 9-0 lead in the second inning, while the pitching corps did an admirable job.

Marin Catholic starter Walker Untermann struck out five batters and held the Knights (19-5) to one earned run on seven hits through five innings. Junior relievers Colt Crum and Jack McGovern wrapped up the game.
