The New York Sirens began restocking their expansion-depleted roster by making a big splash at the top of the order in the first round of the PWHL draft on Tuesday night.
Minutes after selecting Colgate forward Kristyna Kaltounkova with the No. 1 pick, Sirens general manager Pascal Daoust completed a trade with the Toronto Sceptres to acquire the No. 3 pick and choose Wisconsin center Casey O’Brien.
Daoust traded top defenseman Ella Shelton to acquire Toronto’s first and fourth-round pick, which was 27th overall.
The two forwards fill a major offensive hole after New York lost two of their three leading scorers — Alex Carpenter and Jessie Eldridge — as well as starting goalie Corinne Schroeder to Seattle in the PWHL expansion draft and signing process earlier this month. Carpenter and Eldridge combined to score 20 of the Sirens league-low 71 goals last season.
Kaltounkova and O’Brien join a lineup that is deep at defense and features Sarah Fillier, last year’s No. 1 pick, who finished tied for the PWHL lead with 29 points.
Kaltounkova is from the Czech Republic and became the first European-born player to go first in the PWHL draft. She is reunited with Sirens coach Greg Fargo, who coached her at Colgate. Kaltounkova leaves the Raiders after five seasons as the school’s career-leading scorer with 111 goals and second with 223 points.
O’Brien was this season’s Patty Kazmaier award winner after leading the nation with 88 points (26 goals, 62 assists) for the NCAA-champion Badgers. In five seasons, the 23-year-old finished with 274 career points in 182 games to break the Wisconsin record held by four-time Olympian Hilary Knight.
Mogilny gets Hall of Fame spot >> Alexander Mogilny’s long wait for the Hockey Hall of Fame is over, as the high-scoring Russian winger was named as part of the eight-member class of 2025.
Mogilny was joined by fellow former NHL players Joe Thornton, Zdeno Chara and Duncan Keith as well as women’s hockey stars Brianna Decker and Jennifer Botterill. Mogilny had been eligible for election 16 previous year dating to 2009, passed over time after time until getting in on the 17th chance.
Thornton, Chara and Keith all got in in their first year of eligibility.
Matt Martin announces retirement >> Matt Martin announced his retirement after 16 NHL seasons, all but two with the New York Islanders, a departure that leaves the league with only a few players who take the ice without a visor.
Martin was one of just five holdovers in the league who played without a visor on his helmet. His move to the front office as special assistant to Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche makes Ryan O’Reilly, Jamie Benn, Zach Bogosian and Ryan Reaves the only visor-less players remaining.

2025 possibly Steelers QB Rodgers’ last season >> Aaron Rodgers is “pretty sure” the 2025 season, his first with the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be his last in the NFL, the 41-year-old quarterback said.
The four-time MVP signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh earlier this month after two injury-marred seasons with the New York Jets. Rodgers’ base salary is $13.65 million and he could earn up to $19.5 million with incentives, according to Spotrac.
“I’m pretty sure this is it. That’s why we just did a one-year deal. The Steelers didn’t need to put any extra years on that or anything,” Rodgers said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “This was really about finishing with a lot of love and fun and peace for the career that I’ve had.”

Rangers pitcher bradford to have surgery >> Texas Rangers left-hander Cody Bradford will have elbow surgery after a setback during his rehab from a left elbow sprain that has kept him out all season.
Chris Young, the team’s president of baseball operations, said Tuesday that Bradford felt something in his elbow when he resumed throwing after a recent flu bug. He then saw team physician Dr. Keith Meister, who will do the surgery.
The 27-year-old Bradford is 10-6 with a 4.28 ERA in 34 games (21 starts) for Texas the past two seasons. He was expected to be part of the starting rotation this season, but was shut down during spring training in mid-March because of elbow soreness.
