



Nick Martinez took a no-hit bid into the ninth inning before allowing pinch-hitter Elias Díaz’s double and Spencer Steer hit three home runs, leading the Cincinnati Reds over the visiting San Diego Padres 8-1 on Friday night.
Martinez (5-8) walked his third batter, Jackson Merrill, then retired 22 consecutive hitters before walking rookie Trenton Brooks starting the ninth. Díaz then drove an 0-1 changeup off the base of the wall in left-center on Martinez’s 112th and final pitch, which tied his career high.
A 34-year-old right-hander and former Padre, Martinez struck out six as the Reds won for the fourth time in five games.
Reds reliever Taylor Rogers got two outs, then walked a pair of batters, forcing in a run, before striking out Gavin Sheets to end it.
Steer, out of Millikan High, hit solo homers in the second and fourth innings off Dylan Cease (3-7), then a two-run drive against Yuki Matsui in a four-run fifth.
Cardinals 5, Guardians 0: Sonny Gray allowed one hit and struck out a season-high 11 for his first complete game since 2017 as visiting St. Louis blanked Cleveland.
Alec Burleson and Pedro Pagés homered, and Nolan Arenado had a pair of RBIs for the Cardinals.
Nolan Jones had a base hit to right field with two outs in the fifth which prevented the Guardians’ from being no hit for the fifth time since 2021.
It is the seventh complete game of Gray’s 13-year career and fourth career shutout.
Giants 3, White Sox 1: Patrick Bailey hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the sixth inning and San Francisco ended a three-game skid with a win at Chicago.
Landon Roupp (6-5) won his second straight start after giving up an unearned run and seven hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Brewers 10, Rockies 6: Jackson Chourio’s three-run homer capped a six-run fourth inning, Brice Turang added two RBIs and host Milwaukee topped Colorado.
Braxton Fulford had three hits and three RBIs for the Rockies, who have lost four in a row.
Astros 7, Cubs 4: Cam Smith hit a three-run homer in his first game against the Cubs since being traded to Houston and Brandon Walter threw six solid innings for his first MLB victory as the Astros beat visiting Chicago.
Yainer Diaz added a three-run homer as AL West-leading Houston extended its winning streak to five games.
Smith, a first-round draft selection by Chicago last year was acquired by the Astros in the offseason as part of the deal for Kyle Tucker, extended Houston’s lead to 7-0 in the fourth with his home run off the left field façade.
Walter (1-1) allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts.
Yankees 3, Athletics 0: Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered on the first pitch he saw from Mitch Spence in the second inning and New York beat the Athletics at Yankee Stadium.
Cody Bellinger and DJ LeMahieu had RBI singles.
New York rookie starter Will Warren (5-4) survived issuing three walks in the first inning and allowed two hits in five innings.
Pirates 9, Mets 1: Mitch Keller pitched 5 1/3 innings to end his 15-start winless streak and Bryan Reynolds hit a three-run home run as Pittsburgh routed visiting New York.
Keller (2-10) allowed one run and five hits to win for the first time since his first start of the season on March 28 at Miami.
Juan Soto accounted for the Mets’ run with his 20th home run in the fourth.
Blue Jays 9, Red Sox 0: José Berríos pitched seven scoreless innings, George Springer had three hits and two RBI singles, and Toronto shut out Boston at Fenway Park.
Berríos (4-3) allowed just four hits, one walk and struck out eight in handing the Red Sox their sixth loss in a row.
Orioles 22, Rays 8: Gary Sanchez went 4 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs, Ramón Laureano scored four times and host Baltimore stormed back from an early six-run deficit to rout Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay opened the scoring with six runs in the second. Jonathan Aranda, Josh Lowe and Brandon Lowe homered in that inning, but Rays starter Ryan Pepiot couldn’t make it through the bottom half.
Twins 4, Tigers 1: Byron Buxton homered and scored twice to help Minnesota defeat host Detroit for its third straight victory.
David Festa (2-2) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits. He struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.
CANNING HAS SURGERY
Mets pitcher Griffin Canning had surgery Friday to repair a ruptured left Achilles and will miss the rest of the season and possibly part of the 2026 season.
The right-hander was injured during Thursday night’s win over the Braves. Signed to a $4.25 million, one-year contract as a free agent in the offseason, the 29-year-old right-hander was 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts.
The former Santa Margarita High and UCLA standout spent his first five MLB seasons with the Angels before being traded to Atlanta for Jprge Soler last October. However, he was non-tendered by the Braves and became a free agent.
