A 45-year-old Chicago man was killed in Lockport Monday night when his minivan crossed a center line into the path of a tow truck, police said.

Armando Piemonte, who had to be extricated from his vehicle, was pronounced dead at 7:16 p.m. at the Silver Cross Hospital emergency room in New Lenox, according to the Will County coroner's office.

The accident happened at 6:21 p.m. in the 500 block of North State Street, where Piemonte was southbound in his gray Chrysler Town and Country minivan, and the tow truck driver was northbound, according to Deputy Chief Ron Huff.

The 55-year-old tow truck driver, from Lockport, was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation by Lockport police department's crash reconstruction team.

Police said there was no indication the tow truck driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or texting, and toxicology results on Piemonte are pending.

Part of the investigation will include inspection of Piemonte's cellphone records, Huff said.

It was raining at the time of the accident, and Huff said the roads were wet, not icy.

The Lockport Emergency Management Agency assisted with traffic control, as State Street was closed for four-and-a-half hours, Huff said.
