Indians: Shane Bieber’s season is suddenly on pause, leaving the Indians to survive for a while without their ace. The AL’s reigning Cy Young winner won’t throw for at least two weeks because of a right shoulder strain, an injury that will further test the team’s pitching depth and could send the Indians, who have been competitive for 2 1/2 months, into a tailspin. After allowing a season-high in hits — and throwing 107 pitches over five innings — in a loss to the Mariners on Sunday that dropped him to 7-4, Bieber underwent an MRI. It showed he has a subscapularis muscle strain in his right shoulder. Manager Terry Francona said Bieber will be shelved for two weeks and then re-evaluated. “We’re still obviously reaching out for more information and sending the images to different doctors and things like that, trying to get the best information we can,” Francona said Monday. “So, for right now we know it’s no-throw for a couple of weeks.” The Indians placed Bieber on the injured list for the first time in his career. In just his fourth season, the 26-year-old Bieber has quickly developed into one of baseball’s best pitchers. Last season, the right-hander led the majors in wins (eight), ERA (1.63) and strikeouts (122) — a rare triple crown for pitchers. Bieber’s loss is a major blow to the Indians, who have managed to stay in contention despite a rash of key injuries to starter Zach Plesac, slugger Franmil Reyes and Gold Glove catcher Roberto Pérez.
Royals: OF Andrew Benintendi was placed on the 10-day IL with a fractured right rib. The move means that Benintendi won’t be able to face his former team when the Royals host the Red Sox this weekend. “He had something grab when he threw yesterday (against the A’s) with the ball off the wall,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He’d been feeling a little bit of something for a while. Obviously, it wasn’t affecting his swing. On the throw, it grabbed him. He was fine last night. Woke up today and it wasn’t right. He had it X-rayed.” Benintendi, 26, who was acquired from the Red Sox before the season, is hitting .283 with eight HRs and 31 RBIs. He missed most of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season because of a strained right rib cage.
Reds: Hunter Greene is getting a promotion that will bring him one step away from pitching in the major leagues. MLB.com reported Sunday that Greene, the Reds’ No. 2 prospect and No. 57 overall, will be moving up from Double-A Chattanooga to make his next start for Triple-A Louisville. The 21-year-old Greene is 5-0 with a 1.98 ERA in seven starts for Chattanooga. In 41 innings, the right-hander has allowed 27 hits and 14 walks while striking out 60. Greene pitched six innings Friday, allowing two hits and recording nine strikeouts during Chattanooga’s 1-0 win over Pensacola. The No. 2 overall selection in the 2017 draft, Greene sprained the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow during the 2018 season at the low-Class A level. He eventually underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2019, after a torn UCL had developed.
MLB: The upcoming weekend series between the Phillies and Giants in San Francisco will be streamed nationally on Peacock. The weekend series is part of MLB’s commitment to present games on different platforms. MLB has had 12 games streamed on YouTube since the start of last season.
