Alex Ovechkin tied Gordie Howe for the most goals scored for one NHL team, fittingly reaching the milestone in the same city Mr. Hockey became an all-time great.
The 37-year-old superstar scored in the second period, giving him 786 goals with Washington, but Andrew Copp had a go-ahead goal with 3:50 left to help the Detroit Red Wings beat the Capitals 3-1 on Thursday night.
“It’s pretty cool,” Ovechkin said. “It’s a great accomplishment.”
Howe played for the Red Wings from 1946 to 1971, and Ovechkin’s milestone goal was scored on the same end of the rink that the Hall of Famer’s retired No. 9 jersey hangs in the rafters.
“I wish it could’ve been in a winning effort,” Washington coach Peter Laviolette said.
Detroit’s Lucas Raymond pulled the Red Wings into a 1-all tie late in the second period on a power play. Copp scored his first goal in his 10th game with the Red Wings late in the third off Adam Erne’s behind-the-net assist. Dylan Larkin added an empty-net goal in the final minute to seal the victory.
The Red Wings’ Ville Husso made 33 saves.
BRUINS 5, RANGERS 2 >> Trent Frederic and Jake DeBrusk scored third-period goals as streaking Boston won its seventh straight game with a victory at New York.
Frederic’s second goal of the season at 6:04 put the Bruins ahead 3-2 before DeBrusk rifled his fourth past Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin at 10:19.
Nick Foligno and Taylor Hall each had two assists for Boston, off to a franchise-best 10-1-0 start under new coach Jim Montgomery.
HURRICANES 4, LIGHTNING 3, SO >> Sebastian Aho scored in the sixth round of the shootout, and Carolina beat Andrei Vasilevskiy and host Tampa Bay.
The Hurricanes won the shootout 2-1.
Vasilevskiy made 53 saves in regulation and overtime.
Brady Skjei tied it at 3 when he scored a short-handed goal for the Hurricanes at 13:34 of the third.
Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kun- cherov extended his goal-scoring streak to five games.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS 5, SENATORS 4 >> Mark Stone had a goal and an assist as Vegas jumped to a big lead midway through the second period and held on to beat host Ottawa for its sixth consecutive victory.
Reilly Smith, Zach Whitecloud, Chandler Stephenson and William Carrier also scored for Vegas. Logan Thompson finished with 42 saves.
Claude Giroux and Tim Stutzle each had two goals for Ottawa, which has lost four straight.
KRAKEN 4, WILD 0 >> Martin Jones stopped 22 shots for his first shutout in 55 games, Alex Wennberg scored twice and visiting Seattle blanked Minnesota.
Morgan Geekie and Jamie Oleksiak also scored for Seattle, winner of three straight and four of five.
ISLANDERS 5, BLUES 2 >> Anders Lee and Brock Nelson each had a goal and an assist, sending New York to a road victory over St. Louis.
The Islanders have won five in a row while the Blues have lost six straight in regulation.
The Blues, who opened the season with three wins, have been outscored 30-11 during their downturn.
JETS 3, CANADIENS 2, OT >> Kyle Connor scored 1:45 into overtime to give host Winnipeg a win over Montreal.
Pierre-Luc Dubois had a goal and an assist and Blake Wheeler also scored to help the Jets extend their point streak to 4-0-1.
