A 44-year-old Pontiac man was killed Saturday morning when he was hit by an Amtrak train near Sixth and Center streets in Royal Oak, officials said.

Police identified him as Andrew Lester.

According to Royal Oak police, a preliminary investigation showed Lester was struck after he disregarded crossing signals and was trying to run across the tracks as the train approached.

First responders were alerted to the incident through a 911 call at around 9:15 a.m., police said. Lester was transported to Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak where he was pronounced dead.

Alcohol or drugs don’t appear to be factors in the incident, police said.
