BURLINGTON >> The Kassidy Carmichael show was on full display Tuesday night under the lights at Burlington High.

An impressive effort from the Ohio State University-bound lacrosse and hockey was just enough for Westford Academy to play spoiler.

Scoring nine goals, Carmichael and the No. 6 Ghosts edged No. 2 Wellesley in the Division 1 semifinals on Tuesday night in a thrilling 11-10 win to reach the state final.

Carmichael scored the game winner with one second left on a free shot.

“I kind of just ran as fast as I could and I placed it stick-side because that’s where I scored last time and I kind of just jumped and the girls pushed me in. It worked,” Carmichael said.

Westford (19-3) advances to battle No. 1 Concord-Carlisle (22-2) on Thursday at Babson College (7:15 p.m.) for the state crown.

“In the crunch, you want the ball in your best player’s hands. And she is the best player,” said Westford head coach Julie Olivier.

The win is just two days removed from Carmichael’s heroics in Westford Academy’s 11-10 overtime thriller to upset No. 3 Lincoln-Sudbury in the round of 8. Prior to that game, Carmichael erupted for 10 goals in a 19-5 blasting of King Philip in the round of 16.

Carmichael broke the ice at the 10:25 mark of the first quarter and never looked back, recording a hat trick in the quarter as Wellesley broke open an early lead.

Kaitlyn Uller quickly responded to knot the game at 1-1, only for Carmichael and the Ghosts to retake the lead at the 6:17 mark. But the Raiders would pot three straight goals — two from Abigail Beggans and one from Olivia Comella — to establish a 4-2 lead. Carmichael got one back with 14 seconds left as Westford Academy trailed by a goal after the first frame.

But Carmichael was only getting started. The senior scored three straight goals to open the subsequent stanza, catapulting Westford Academy to a 6-4 lead with 3:13 left in the half. Wellesley eventually put an end to the solo run with a goal by Tara Battaglino with 1:09 left as the Ghosts took a 6-5 lead into the break.

Wellesley’s momentum leaked into the third, evening the score at 6-6 on a goal from Beggans with 9:52 remaining. Then, Emily Munchak found twine only 32 seconds later to erase Westford Academy’s lead before Beggans scored again at the 7:54 mark to increase Wellesley’s lead to 8-6.

The Ghosts answered with a goal off the stick of Kiley Carmichael, but Wellesley entered the fourth clinging to a 9-8 advantage after another goal by Comella. Big-time stops from Ava Preysnar in goal kept Westford Academy within striking distance.

Kassidy Carmichael scored her seventh of the night with 8:53 left in the game to cut the deficit to 9-8, but Comella potted a pivotal insurance tally to keep Wellesley in front.

However, Westford Academy kept fighting, coming within a goal with 3:58 left on a net-front conversion by Evie Weber to open the door for Kassidy Carmichael to tie the game at 10 with 2:36 remaining in the thrilling game.

“Making it this far should tell teams we’re not a team to mess around with … we just really grew, and we knew the playoffs are just a totally different season so I think we came out like a totally different team and we really brought it,” Carmichael said.
