Looking to spark a struggling club, the New York Yankees acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins on Saturday for three minor leaguers: catcher Agustín Ramírez, infielder Jared Serna and infielder Abrahan Ramírez.

New York entered Saturday 10-23 after a 50-22 start, plagued by sputtering starting pitching, a shaky bullpen and an offense overly reliant on Aaron Judge and Juan Soto following injuries to Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo. Third baseman DJ LeMahieu and left fielder Alex Verdugo have been in deep slumps.

An All-Star second baseman in 2022, the 26-year-old Chisholm has played center field for most of the past two seasons.

He is batting .249 with 13 homers and 50 RBIs this year and is a .246 career hitter with 66 homers and 205 RBIs in five seasons. Chisholm has 22 stolen bases, matching last year’s total and one shy of his career high.

Phillies land ’23 star

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired closer Carlos Estévez from the Los Angeles Angels for a pair of minor league pitching prospects as they strengthen their bullpen for a run at their first World Series championship since 2008.

Estévez has 20 saves this season, a year after he had 31 and was an All-Star for the Angels.

The 31-year-old Estévez, a native of the Dominican Republic, originally signed with Colorado as an international free agent in 2011 and made his major league debut in 2016.

He has 76 saves in 418 career appearances, all in relief.

Camden Yards 1,000

Fittingly, Manny Machado reached a hitting milestone at Camden Yards.

Back where his big league career began, Machado hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning Saturday to reach 1,000 RBIs. He had three hits in San Diego’s 9-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles, the seventh straight victory for the Padres.

“Doing it where it all started,” Machado said. “I got my first one here and I got my thousandth here.”

Machado began his major league career in Baltimore in 2012 and played there until he was traded in 2018.

Senga’s sees strain

Kodai Senga’s season is over almost as soon as it started.

The New York Mets pitcher is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season after straining his left calf Friday night in the sixth inning of his 2024 debut against Atlanta. The team’s projected No. 1 starter this year, Senga had been sidelined by a shoulder injury since early in spring training.

Pearson dealt to Cubs

The Toronto Blue Jays traded right-hander Nate Pearson to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for two minor leaguers.

The Blue Jays received shortstop Josh Rivera and outfielder Yohendrick Pinango for the 27-year-old Pearson, Toronto’s first-round pick in 2017.

All-Star Suárez on IL

All-Star left-hander Ranger Suárez was put on the 15-day injured list by the Philadelphia Phillies because zof soreness in his lower back.

The 28-year-old started 9-1 and earned his first National League All-Star selection and is 10-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 20 starts after a summer slide. He has thrown 119 1/3 innings, on pace to top his 125 last year and career high of 155 1/3 in 2022.
