Cade Cunningham wasn’t thinking about himself after the first postseason victory of his career. His focus was on all the Detroit fans who stuck by the Pistons during 17 years since the last one.
Now Cunningham and his teammates want to give those fans more than just a game. They want to get them a series.
Cunningham had 33 points and 12 rebounds, Dennis Schroder made the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 55 seconds left, and the Pistons snapped their NBA-record, 15-game postseason losing streak by beating the host Knicks 100-94 on Monday night in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.
“It’s a great feeling. It feels good to represent the city like we did tonight,” Cunningham said. “It’s something that the city been waiting on for a long time, so we feel good about it and we’re ready to get back to the crib and perform in front of them.”
The sixth-seeded Pistons, who hadn’t even been to the postseason since 2019, recovered after the Knicks erased a 15-point deficit to earn their first playoff victory since Game 4 of the 2008 East finals against the Celtics, who won the final two games of that series. The Pistons were then swept in 2009, 2016 and 2019 before dropping Game 1 at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
Now they’re back in the win column, all tied in the series and will host Game 3 on Thursday night.
Jalen Brunson scored 37 points for the third-seeded Knicks.
Tatum ailing: All-Star forward Jayson Tatum was listed as doubtful with a bone bruise in his right wrist for Game 2 of the Celtics’ East series against the Magic on Wednesday.
Tatum’s designation was listed on the injury report released Tuesday. He injured the wrist in the fourth quarter of the Celtics’ 103-86 victory on Sunday.
With the Celtics leading 89-73 with 8:28 remaining, Tatum went up for a dunk and was hit hard by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as he tried to block it. Tatum landed awkwardly on his right side.
He stayed down briefly before eventually rising to his feet, clenching his right hand.
After a video review by referees, Caldwell-Pope’s foul was upgraded to a flagrant foul. Tatum subsequently missed the two ensuing free throws but remained in the game. He finished with 17 points, but was 8-of-22 from the field in 40 minutes of action.
Tatum said a postgame X-ray came back clean.
Asked about Tatum’s status after the second-seeded Celtics practiced Tuesday morning, coach Joe Mazzulla said the All-Star was limited, and day to day.
“He was able to do some stuff,” Mazzulla said. “He was sore after the game, has gotten a little bit better today.
“He was able to go through some on-court work and we’ll go from there.”
Leonard leads Clippers: Kawhi Leonard scored 39 points on 15-of-19 shooting and the fifth-seeded Clippers evened their Western Conference series against the fourth-seeded Nuggets with a 105-102 win on Monday in Denver.
