The UC Santa Cruz women’s soccer team was eliminated by host Pomona-Pitzer 5-4 on penalty kicks in the first round of the NCAA D-III Tournament on Saturday in Claremont.
Camille Anneet, Kristi Truong, Amanda Scott, and Amaya Espardinez made PKs for UCSC (10-2-6), the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament champion.
Maxine Davey, Ella Endo, Taylor Marshall, Spencer Deutz, and Collins Rojas made PKs for Pomona-Pitzer (16-2-2), the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season champion.
The teams were scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation and two, 10-minute overtimes.
Goalie Ainsley Gove made 10 saves for UCSC. Patricia DePalma made five saves for the Sagehens.
Women’s volleyball
UCSC 3, Mary Washington 0 >> The No. 3 seed Banana Slugs earned a 25-19, 25-15, 25-23 win in the third-place match at the C2C Tournament in Newport News, Virginia, on Saturday.
Senior middle blocker Kelly Ann Greene, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 11 kills for UCSC (16-14). Senior opposite Ashley Magley had nine kills. Sophomore outside hitter/defensive specialist Kate Lau had six kills, three aces, two blocks, and eight digs. Freshman setter Margo Melgoza had 39 assists, and junior outside hitter Anna Hospodar made 12 digs.
No. 2 Christopher Newport defeated No. 1 Salisbury in their five-set championship thriller.
Women’s cross country
D-III West Regional >> UCSC took third place with 96 points at the NCAA D-III West Regional on Saturday.
The Banana Slugs’ Kenzie Seymour (21:03.5) took third on the 6k course at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada, Oregon, and teammate Helena Janku (21:28.4) took seventh.
UCSC’s Hanna Hekkanen (21:56.7) took 22nd and Jordan Baden (21:57.7) took 23rd. Sara Teitelbaum (22:45.8) took 41st and also scored for the Banana Slugs.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ Riley Capuano won in 20:54.1 and led the Athenas (61) to the team title.
Men’s cross country
D-III West Regional >> UCSC took fourth place with 132 points at the NCAA D-III West Regional on Saturday.
The Banana Slugs’ Luke Holland (24:27.7) took ninth on the 8k course at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada, Oregon. Eric Anderson (24:37.5) took 14th for UCSC, and teammate Graeme Maclean (24:50.6) took 18th.
UCSC’s Camden Hebert (25:29.5) was 45th and Camden Jaureguy (25:39.4) was 49th.
Pomona-Pitzer’s Quinn White won in 24:01.1 and led the Sagehens (42) to the team title.
College football
At Redwoods,65, Cabrillo 9 >> Martin Magana-Ramirez kicked a 32-yard field goal and Ambrose Conteh scored on a 75-yard run in the first quarter of the Seahawks’ nonconference loss Saturday.
The Redwoods totaled 597 yards on offense to Cabrillo’s 265.
Redwoods quarterback Bryton Livingston passed for 332 and four touchdowns, and Paxton Page and Isaiah Hemmings each rushed for a pair of touchdowns.
Tosin Alade made 15 tackles for Cabrillo, and Jeter Olivares made 10 stops.
Cabrillo (3-6, 3-2) closes Coast Conference play and its season at Monterey Peninsula (8-0, 4-0) on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Women’s basketball
Cabrillo 64, at Diablo Valley 45 >> The Seahawks won their nonconference game Saturday.
