California State Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry has announced her endorsement of Mayra Vega for Yolo County District 3’s supervisor, who announced her run after current Supervisor Mary Vixie Sandy notified the public she would not seek reelection.
“Mayra is not just a councilmember and community leader, she’s a small business owner and a mom — and nobody understands the needs of Yolo County residents better than her,” Aguiar-Curry said. “Mayra has not just talked the talk, but she’s walked the walk when it comes to standing up for working families. I am proud to endorse her candidacy for Supervisor, and know that she will continue to fight for the future of Yolo County.”Earlier this summer, Sandy sent out a newsletter stating that she would not run again for the position she has held since October 2023, after being appointed to fill the role by Gov. Gavin Newsom, following the death of her husband, former Supervisor Gary Sandy.
At the time of her appointment, Sandy became the first woman to serve on the board since 2010 and the first woman to represent the 3rd District, which generally encompasses Woodland and rural areas outside the community such as Bryte, Broderick, and the Wild Wings Community.
Vega publicly announced her campaign in a newsletter on July 1, stating that she wants to represent the residents of the district.
Vega was first elected to the Woodland City Council in 2020 and reelected in 2024, running on a platform that included making housing more affordable, increasing access to behavioral health services to help homeless individuals off the streets, protecting farmland, and enhancing water sustainability.
Aguiar-Curry’s endorsement comes shortly after Yolo County’s U.S. Congress representative Mike Thompson formally announced his backing of Vega earlier this month, calling her a “dedicated community leader who has consistently put her service to others above herself.”
“I’m deeply honored to have Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry’s endorsement. Her dedication to public service and our shared commitment to uplifting our community means so much to me,” Vega said. “We’re building a coalition focused on common-sense solutions, accountability, and opportunity for all. I’m grateful for the support and look forward to the work ahead.”
