The Marshall baseball team has pulled out some incredibly close wins in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs, and Tuesday’s semifinal was no different.

The season to remember will continue for Marshall after a 4-3 victory over Heritage Christian.

The Eagles (20-6-1) will take on Estancia in the championship game Saturday at Cal State Fullerton at 1 p.m.

In the quarterfinals, Marshall edged Santa Fe 1-0.

“Everybody did a good job today,” Marshall coach Joe Federico said. “All these games are close, they are gut-wrenching. Those guys are really prepared. I was really nervous about this game. I haven’t slept since the last time (we played). I think I’ve had six hours of sleep in four days.”

Marshall’s Ben Muro broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI double in the sixth inning.

“As much as it was my double, it was a team effort today,” Muro said. “We played seven innings of baseball and I had only one at-bat that contributed to that.”

Caleb Thatcher earned the save and also hit a home run in the fifth inning that briefly gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Thatcher was just three days removed from throwing 113 pitches in a 1-0 quarterfinal win Friday.

San Dimas 4, Beckman 1: Beckman got a quality outing from starting pitcher Carter Head in the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals. But the Saints countered with a quality pitcher of their own in freshman Dean Brosterhouse.

The Patriots couldn’t capitalize on scoring opportunities against Brosterhouse in the first two innings nor extend a potential big inning late.

The Saints, however, made the most of their scoring chances and made some fine plays on defense on their way to a victory.

San Dimas (19-10) will play Glendora for the Division 3 championship on Saturday at Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m.

The Patriots were trailing 2-0 in the sixth when they started to rally.

Sean Franco led off the inning with a single and was driven in by Kai Carney’s double for the Patriots’ first run.

Bosterhouse retired Jaxson Gomez for the first out, then was relieved by James Rocha who struck Nick Molina for the second out.

Seth Sanchez then hit a fly ball into shallow center field that appeared as though it would drop in for a hit and score the tying run, but second baseman Josh Calcanas made an over-the-shoulder catch, nearly colliding with the shortstop and center fielder.

“These guys have been playing their best baseball in the playoffs,” San Dimas co-coach Mike Regan said. “We’ve been like Jekyll and Hyde and now these guys are putting it together and they’re having great at-bats and I’m really proud of these guys.”

Brosterhouse earned the victory. He allowed three hits and a run over 5 1/3 innings.

Pioneer 3, Valencia 1: The Pioneer baseball team is making history.

The Titans defeated Placentia Valencia in the Division 8 semifinals and will advance to their first baseball championship game.

Pioneer will take on Fillmore in the championship game Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Long Beach State’s Blair Field.

“It’s unbelievable,” Pioneer coach Bob Espinosa said of the win. “We’re senior heavy and they’re just believing in themselves right now and they’re going to a championship game, and they’re going with a smile.”

The big moment for the Titans came in the second inning when senior right fielder Carlos Renteria hit a two-run single to left field, scoring seniors Cristian Maciel and Josh Carrasco, who both got aboard with singles.

“My hit was honestly a deciding factor in winning this game,” an excited Renteria said. “Sometimes it takes that little push.”

The Titans scored their third run on an RBI single to center by shortstop Izzy Copado. The hit scored Renteria for a 3-0 cushion.

Ganesha 11, South Torrance 1: Entering the Division 4 semifinal, the Ganesha and South Torrance baseball teams had each averaged 2.3 runs per game in winning their first three playoff games.

So when Ganesha scored three runs in the first inning Tuesday, it resembled an offensive onslaught.

The Giants kept the pressure on from there, adding three more runs in the second inning en route to a 10-run victory.

Ganesha (22-3) will play Dos Pueblos in the championship game Saturday at 5 p.m. at Long Beach State’s Blair Field.

It will be the Giants’ second trip to the section finals in the last three years. They won the Division 7 title two years ago.

“To have this opportunity to be in the championship senior year and go out with a bang is a really cool opportunity,” said Ganesha catcher Isaiah Ibarra. “We have to go out there and give it our best and hopefully we walk away champions.”

The Giants got on the board in the first when Bryant Loo delivered a two-run single.

“I got to two strikes early and I was just trying to compete. I happened to pop the ball through (the infield),” Loo said. “You don’t want to let off the pedal. You want to keep it going.”

Ganesha did keep its collective feet on the pedal. Alvaro Moreno stole home as part of a double steal to make it 3-0.

A South Torrance error in the second led to three unearned runs as Ibarra delivered an RBI double and Moreno had a two-run single to make it 6-0.
