STATE COLLEGE, Pa. >> Before the game, Blake Corum warmed up wearing a ski hat that summed up Michigan’s attitude right now: “Michigan vs. Everybody.”
After the second-ranked Wolverines were done pummeling No. 9 Penn State, Corum wore a bloodied bridge of his nose and the satisfaction of knowing that everybody is still winless against Michigan this season.
With coach Jim Harbaugh banned by the Big Ten Conference, Corum, J.J. McCarthy and the Wolverines played unfazed by a scandal that has hounded the program for weeks — and their toughest opponent yet — grinding past the Nittany Lions 24-15 on Saturday.
“We’re one. It made us stronger,” said Corum, who carried 26 times. “Obviously, we wanted Coach Harbaugh to be here, but we did it for him today. We’ve been going through a lot lately, but it’s only brought us closer together.”
Corum ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns, McCarthy made a few key plays with his arm and legs and the Wolverines (10-0, 7-0, No. 3 CFP) improved to 3-0 since it was revealed the program was under NCAA investigation for a sign-stealing scheme.
The timeline of the accusations cover the last three seasons of Michigan’s surge to the top of the Big Ten and two straight College Football Playoff appearances.
Coincidence? Plenty of fans think not.
“People can say whatever they want,” fifth-year offensive lineman Trevor Keegan said. “We know what’s true. We know what’s in this locker room. We trust each other. We’re brothers, we’re in this thing together. That’s the way it’s going to be.”
The struggles in big games continued for coach James Franklin and Penn State (8-2, 5-3, No. 10 CFP), which scored a combined 27 points in losses to Big Ten East rivals Ohio State and Michigan this season.
“We’ve lost to the No. 1 and the No. 3 team in the country, that’s not good enough,” Franklin said. “We have to find ways to win those games.”
Illinois 48, Indiana 45, OT
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. >> John Paddock threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Williams in overtime to lift Illinois past Indiana.
After Indiana’s Chris Freeman kicked a 41-yard field goal in OT, Paddock scrambled to his right and connected with Williams near the end zone.
Paddock threw for 507 yards and four touchdowns in his first start for the Illini since transferring from Ball State. Replacing injured starter Luke Altmyer, Paddock completed 24 of 36 passes.
Williams, the Big Ten’s leading receiver, had nine catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns for Illinois (5-5, 3-4).
Pat Bryant had five catches for 131 yards and a touchdown for the Ilini before being injured midway through the third quarter and Casey Washington had five catches for 99 yards and a touchdown.
Reggie Love had 24 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns for Illinois, which ended a four-game losing streak to the Hoosiers that dated to 2012.
Brendan Sorsby was 22 for 33 passing for 289 yards and three touchdowns — he also ran for two touchdowns — and Donaven McCulley caught 11 passes for 137 yards for Indiana (3-7, 1-5), which led 27-12 in the second quarter.
Maryland 13, Nebraska 10
LINCOLN, Neb. >> Jack Howes hit a 24-yard field goal as time ran out to lift Maryland to a win over Nebraska.
Maryland’s victory, its first since late September, snapped a four-game losing streak and made the Terrapins (6-4, 3-4 Big Ten) bowl eligible. Nebraska (5-5, 3-4) dropped its second straight game and still to win one of its last two games to play in a bowl for the first time since 2016.
Nebraska turned the ball over on three consecutive fourth-quarter possessions, the final one Tarhib Still’s interception of No. 3 quarterback Chubba Purdy in the end zone with 3:37 left. That set up Maryland’s 12-play, 75-yard winning drive.
Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 10
MADISON, Wis. >> Ben Bryant returned after missing four games due to injury and led touchdown drives on each of Northwestern’s first three series against his former coach to help the Wildcats defeat Wisconsin.
Northwestern (5-5, 3-4 Big Ten) snapped a 14-game losing streak in true road games, which had been the longest active such skid by any Football Bowl Subdivision team. The Wildcats also made interim head coach David Braun the first Northwestern coach to earn at least five wins in his debut season since Walter McCornack went 10-1-3 in 1903.
Braun had joined Northwestern’s staff as defensive coordinator in January. He got promoted when Pat Fitzgerald was fired prior to the season due to a hazing and abuse scandal.
Wisconsin (5-5, 3-4) dropped its third straight after falling 24-10 to No. 3 Ohio State (No. 1 College Football Playoff) two weeks ago and 20-14 at Indiana last week. Wisconsin lost this one as an 11 ½-point favorite over a team it had beaten 42-7 last year and 35-7 in 2021.
Iowa 22, Rutgers 0
IOWA CITY, Iowa >> Drew Stevens kicked three field goals, and Iowa added two fourth-quarter touchdowns on the way to the win.
Iowa (8-2, 5-2 Big Ten) held Rutgers (6-4, 3-4) to just 127 yards for its first shutout of the season. The Hawkeyes shut down Kyle Monangai, the Big Ten’s leading rusher at 100.3 yards per game, holding him to just 39 yards on 13 carries.
The Hawkeyes came into the game ranked 130th in the nation in total offense, but put up a season-high 402 yards and had almost a 17-minute edge in time of possession.
