Richard (Rusty) Genzel passed away peacefully at home with family by his bedside at the age of 69. A devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who was deeply committed to his family. Born September 29, 1955, in Davenport, Iowa to Bruce and Marion Genzel he lived with his family in Bettendorf, Iowa.
Richard attended Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, played football for four years and graduated in 1973.
While at Mater Dei Richard met Arlene Dominguez and later went on to marry her after college. Together they had two beautiful daughters, Victoria and Danielle.
At the height of his career Richard joined forces with several colleagues and together in 2007 they established a very successful civil engineering company, SWT Engineering specializing in solid waste management.
Richard retired from SWT Engineering in December 2021.
While still working Richard designed and built a 2,400 square foot cottage on Moses Lake, WA. Then continuing his dream, he designed and built a 3,000 square foot house right on the water at Moses Lake, completing it just before his death. One of Richard’s passions was cooking in the kitchen and BBQ-ing ribs, hamburgers, steaks, flat steak and just about anything else on his Traeger smoker. Richard loved the water and spent many days and weeks boating on the Colorado River with his family and his brother-in-law Gary Dominguez and Gary’s wonderful family. Richard discovered fishing in 2002, and together with 17 other male members of his family enjoyed semi-annual family fishing trips to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ontario, Canada.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce & Marion Genzel, his-mother-in law Amelia Dominguez, and two brother-in-law’s Ernie & Gary Dominguez.
Richard is survived by his wife Arlene, daughters Victoria Aphailee & Danielle Genzel, Son-in-law Jeff Aphailee, granddaughter Violet Aphailee, sisters; Jeanne Daurer, Barbara Ryder, Mary Anne Breen & Kathy Lindstrom, brothers; John & Bob Genzel, sister-in-laws; Suzie Dominguez, Nancy Genzel, Diana Genzel, brother-in-law’s Bob Daurer, Dave Ryder, John Breen and Bob Lindstrom. Nieces; Sara Steffen, Rebecca McDaid, Kristina Adams, Amy Fabatz, Lisa Cox and Annie Lindstrom.
Nephews; Gary Nicholas Dominguez, Jeff Adams, Jeromy Fabatz, David Steffen, Ryan McDaid, Jeff, Chris & John Daurer, Tony and Jim Ryder, Rob and Ryan Genzel, Connor Breen, and Daniel Lindstrom. Richard will be interned at Holy Sepulcher Catholic Cemetery, Orange, CA.
