After reaching a win streak of 17 straight last year, the Woodland Christian girls basketball team decided to run that same streak this year and did so after a routine 77-30 win over Sierra Delta League rivals Golden Sierra Wednesday night.
With the win, the Cardinals (19-5, 11-0 SLD) clinched at least a share of the SDL title early, with three games left to play. Lindhurst is in second with an 8-3 record.
“It was National Girls and Women in Sports Day (Wednesday), and the girls celebrated with a home win,” Cardinals head coach Shiloh Sorbello said. “We were buoyed by the cheers of our friends from the Woodland Wizards, the local Special Olympics basketball team. Our team has enjoyed getting to know them the last couple of weeks by helping at their practices.”
Senior star point guard Keziah Maldonado-Lemus had her best statistical game as a Cardinal, finishing with an eye-popping triple-double of 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. According to Sorbello, it is her fourth career triple-double, as she had one as a sophomore and two last year as a junior for Pioneer High School.
Sophomore Siena Sorbello was a beneficiary of several of Keziah’s assists and finished with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in a row. Elena Ganyo was on fire from beyond the arc, hitting 5 3-pointers in just 8 attempts, finishing with 17 points.
Sophomore Bailee Broward had 2 3-pointers in the first quarter and hauled in 9 rebounds. Senior Teagan Hayes had 16 points, 4 assists, and a team-high 8 steals.
Up next for the Cardinals will be a road league game against San Juan, which is set for Friday. The following week, they will travel to Rodriguez for a non-league clash on Monday before ending the SDL season with two home games against Rio Vista and Mesa Verde on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
“Overall, we need to continue working on finishing inside shots, limiting our turnovers, and tightening up our defensive rotations,” Sorbello said. “We have a tune-up on Friday at San Juan and look forward to three more competitive games next week to conclude the regular season.”
