If you imbibed a little too much over the holidays or enjoy joining friends for a drink but prefer an alcohol-free experience then, thanks to Explore Butte County and 24 local restaurants, January is your month to raise a glass and enjoy.
Through Jan. 31 Explore Butte County is hosting its first Dry January Passport, a month-long celebration of mocktails, non-alcoholic cocktails. There is no cost to get a passport and there’s no app to download, but to qualify for one of five $200 gift card prizes that will be awarded at the end of the month, registration is required.
“January is always hard for restaurants and bars because consumers are coming off the holidays and literally and figuratively tightening their belts,” said Ashley Baer, Explore Butte County marketing director. “The Dry January Passport is a great opportunity for people to stick with their dry goals while also still supporting local businesses through a typically slow part of the year.”
To register for a Dry January Passport go to https://www.explorebuttecounty.com on a smart phone then follow the “join the challenge” prompt. Once registered and logged into the web app, passport participants visiting a participating establishment may to take a photo of the mocktail they’ve ordered and “check-in” on the site by uploading the photo.
Each “check-in” qualifies as an entry for the grand prize drawing. To add a little more fun, the passport also offers a friendly competition through which participants can earn one or more of seven virtual “badges” for participating. Badges include “Taste Tester,” earned by visiting one location all the way up to the “Sip Seeker Supreme,” earned by visiting 12 of the two dozen participating establishments.
“Most of the restaurants will be offering at least two special mocktails for the passport event with several offering three to six specials,” said Baer. “All the drinks I’ve tried so far have been delicious.”
One of the mocktails created for Dry January includes an “Abstinent Mule” made with blood orange ginger beer, cranberry juice, lemon juice, simple syrup and bitters at Union in Oroville. The Sicilian Café in Chico is offering two specials: a “Blueberry Mockito,” made with fresh blueberries, mint, lime, simple syrup and soda as well as a “Blueberry Basil Sparkling Lemonade,” made with fresh blueberries, basil, lavender syrup, lemon and soda.
All the Bitter — a Chico-based producer of alcohol-free, organic cocktail bitters — is also participating in the passport but not until Jan. 15 when the business opens its new bottle shop and visitor tasting room at 144 Meyers Street, Suite 140 in Chico. The new facility will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
For the passport event, All the Bitter is serving samples of its bitters and soda, as well as non-alcoholic wines, spirits and cocktails. The bottle shop and tasting room will also be featuring feature small tastes of popular non-alcoholic cocktails including Espresso Martinis, Old Fashions, Margaritas and Lemon Drop. These mocktails will also be available for purchase in discounted mocktail kit bundles, complete with recipe cards.
While most Dry January Passport locations are open to all ages, some are 21 and older only venues. A complete list of all participating locations, age restrictions and the specials being offered go to explorebuttecounty.com/DryJanuary.
