Sean Chamberlin scored in the first half and Jackson Richardson provided the winner in extra time as the Archie Williams boys soccer team advanced to its third section final in four years following a 2-1 road win at Cardinal Newman on Tuesday night.

“Our guys just dug deep and we just had grit out there, man,” Archie Williams coach Rene Ayala said. “I think what really helped us was our counters. (The Cardinals) commit so many people in the attack and we were kind of ready for it and we were ready to capitalize on the counter.”

The No. 4 Peregrine Falcons (12-4-5) hit the road to face No. 2 Granada in Livermore at 7 p.m. Friday for the North Coast Section Division II title.

Archie Williams won the D-III title in 2022 against Marin Academy, lost to eventual D-III champion Terra Linda in the quarters in 2023, then fell to Ukiah in the D-III final last season.

Archie Williams got the ball to Willy Finley around 15 minutes in and he assisted Chamberlin for a 1-0 lead. Cardinal Newman (13-3-3) tied the game following a corner kick in about the 50th minute.

“We have about 30 minutes left in the game and that’s when the game could have gone either way,” Ayala said. “To our credit, we were able to bear down and weathered the storm.”

Cardinal Newman hit the crossbar later in the second half but was unable to find another breakthrough. Archie Williams got the game into extra time and won it in the 83rd minute.

“Willy got the ball around the 20-yard line and he played a magical through ball to Jackson, who made an overlapping run then took a great first touch toward the goal.”

Richardson finished off his chance and the game, slotting home for a 2-1 victory.

Senior Emely Chacon came up with a huge save in net for San Rafael as the sixth-seeded Bulldogs upset No. 2 Saint Mary’s 5-4 on penalty kicks in Wednesday’s North Coast Section D-IV semifinal after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation. The Bulldogs (15-8) earned a title shot against the winner of the other semifinal between No. 4 Sonoma Valley and No. 8 Pinole Valley.

Wednesday’s semifinal in Albany got off to a late start due to a lack of officials. The match started about an hour later than the scheduled 3 p.m. kickoff. Sophomore Joselin Romero Garcia gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage before the Panthers (14-5-1) tied it up. Chacon stopped the final shot during penalty kicks from the Panthers to lock up San Rafael’s victory. For full game details, visit www.marinij.com.
