Davis Thompson capped a roller coaster of a back nine at Torrey Pines with a birdie to take the lead Friday in the Genesis Invitational. Scottie Scheffler had an unusually wild day off the tee and was right on his heels.

It set up for a compelling weekend in this $20 million signature event with two names leaping off the pages of the leaderboard — Scheffler, playing bogey-free despite hitting only five fairways, and Rory McIlroy showing the form that led him to victory at Pebble Beach.

Thompson made only two pars on the back nine and finished with a wedge to a foot for birdie and a 6-under 66 for a one-shot lead over Scheffler.

Reed sinks an ace in LIV Adelaide first round

Patrick Reed hit a hole-in-one during the first round of the LIV Golf’s Adelaide tournament at The Grange.

Reed’s ace at the par-3 12th — the so-called “Party Hole” — came just 15 minutes into the opening round of the three-round, shotgun-start tournament. The 34-year-old Reed’s ace was just the sixth tee shot at the hole.

The hole-in-one was one of the few highlights for Reed. He shot a 1-over 73 with two birdies and five bogeys to add to his ace and was seven shots behind first-round leader Sam Horsfield, an Englishman who shot a bogey-free 66.

Collier wins Unrivaled 1-on-1 championship

Napheesa Collier of the Lynx took home $200,000 after she beat Washington Mystics forward Aaliyah Edwards in the final of Unrivaled’s 1-on-1 tournament.

The winner’s check was the largest one-day prize in women’s basketball history, Unrivaled commissioner Micky Lawler said.

Collier, a co-founder of the Unrivaled 3-on-3 league and a No. 1 seed in the 30-player tournament, won the best-of-three series 2-1 over the eighth-seeded Edwards to become Unrivaled’s first 1-on-1 champion.

Each game between the former UConn standouts was played to a winning score of 8, with Edwards coming from behind to take the opener and Collier winning the final two.

The win capped a dominant tournament run for Collier, who plays for Unrivaled’s Lunar Owls.

Earlier Collier overwhelmed former UConn teammate and No. 6 seed Azura Stevens in their semifinal matchup. Collier scored the first eight points of the game and the reigning WNBA Defensive Player of the Year relied on stifling defense to win 11-2.

Collier breezed past Katie Lou Samuelson in the first round before winning a physical second-round battle against Rickea Jackson. She then beat her Lynx and Lunar Owls teammate Courtney Williams to reach the semifinals.

She shot her way past Edwards in the decisive Game 3, making 4 of 6 shots and holding Edwards scoreless.

Grant Fisher broke his second world indoor record within a week when he shattered a 21-year-old mark in the 5,000 meters at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational.

Last Saturday at the Millrose Games, Fisher broke the indoor world record in the 3,000 meters when he finished in 7:22.91. That broke the record of 7:23.81 set by Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma.
