LAKELAND, Fla. >> It didn’t take long for the multi-million dollar improvements to the facilities at TigerTown to pay off.
Even though the exhibition game between the Tigers and Blue Jays was canceled due to the steady rains that fell on central Florida on Monday, it was still a full work day for the Tigers players.
“The new facility is definitely needed today,” manager AJ Hinch said. “This is the first rainout in my time here (last one was in 2016), but it won’t stop us from working. Appreciate you, Chris.”
That shoutout, of course, was for CEO Chris Ilitch, who in the last three years has sponsored more the $200 million worth of infrastructure improvements to the facilities in Lakeland and Detroit.
With a new covered turf half-field, a climate-controlled batting cage and 20 covered bullpen mounds, Monday was hardly a lost day.
“We will do full fundamentals, full infield on the turf and be dry,” Hinch said. “The only people who will get wet today are the pitchers who have to play catch on the turf field between showers.”
The pitching plan and the travel roster for Tuesday’s game in Sarasota were adjusted. Keider Montero, who was scheduled to start Monday, will pitch against the Orioles on Tuesday. He will follow starter Jackson Jobe. Lefty Brant Hurter is also scheduled to pitch Tuesday.
In addition, Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter, who were scheduled to make their spring debuts Monday, will now make the trip to Sarasota. Second baseman Gleyber Torres’ spring debut will be pushed to Wednesday in Lakeland. Relievers Brenan Hanifee, Sean Guenther and Ryan Miller, all scheduled to work Monday, will be available to pitch Tuesday, as well.
