An East Chicago woman is facing a murder charge after allegedly shooting a woman dead on Saturday in her apartment after an apparent argument during a night of drinking.

Rena L. Dixon, 33, was also charged Monday with unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and a gun enhancement.

She is in custody at the Lake County Jail, held without bond.

The victim, Aaliyah Shewan, 27, of Aurora, Illinois, was shot in the stomach and transported to St. Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago where she was pronounced dead. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force Detective Roger Escutia wrote East Chicago police responded April 26 to the 1300 block of West 150th Street for a reported shooting.

Shewan was found shot in Dixon’s living room, which was in “disarray.”

Shewan’s boyfriend told police he originally told 911 it was a drive-by shooting because he didn’t think she would die and didn’t want to get Dixon in trouble.

Dixon called him to invite the Aurora couple over that night. They were there with Dixon and another man — whose identity Escutia didn’t discover, records show.

Officers found Dixon sitting in the passenger seat of a Chrysler 300 parked outside. She gave her name before she appeared to pass out. Police smelled alcohol.

During a police interview, Shewan’s boyfriend was “distraught,” when he learned she died. He consented to a DNA swab. His story matched video and audio evidence, Escutia wrote.

After they arrived, the woman started “(trash) talking,” which turned 20 minutes later into “tussling,” but they weren’t physically fighting, the boyfriend said.

Dixon got a gun. She started arguing with Shewan’s boyfriend. He took the gun, then gave it back as she got “combative,” the affidavit states. He claimed he didn’t realize at first Shewan had been shot.

He told Dixon to call 911. She refused and declined to give the address, he said.

A baby camera from the toddler’s room captured audio.

On the recording, two women appeared to be yelling or bantering. There was a 34-second pause.

“I didn’t even call you,” a woman said before a gunshot was heard.

“Stop,” and “Whoa,” men appear to say repeatedly.

“Let it go,” Shewan’s boyfriend said.

The other man says the same.

“I did let it go,” a woman replies. “On my mama.”

The boyfriend appears to plead with Dixon to move.

“Give me my tool back,” she said.

Shewan moans in the background.

The boyfriend calls 911, begging for help, but doesn’t know the address.

“Indiana,” he says, when asked the location.

The baby cam shows he went into the toddler’s room while on the phone.

When interviewed, Dixon didn’t give the other man’s name, then asked for a lawyer.

She was charged in 2018 with aggravated battery in Cook County.
