Skyline’s seniors celebrated what might be their last game together on Friday night.
The Falcons came into their regular-season finale right on the Class 5A bubble at No. 40 and don’t have a much clearer picture on if they’ll make 5A’s field of 40 after their 66-56 loss to then-No. 34 Silver Creek.
“We’re just at peace with whatever happens,” said Skyline senior Johnny McCray, who along with his teammates will await the unveiling of the 6A and 5A postseason brackets on Sunday.
Silver Creek (10-12, 2-11) wasn’t quite ready to say that it’s a postseason lock, and on Saturday it got dealt another minor blow with an 83-81 loss to No. 53 Pomona. But the Raptors are in barring something weird.
The Raptors stayed afloat without star player Luke Schmeeckle for the first half the season as he recovered from a torn MCL, ACL and meniscus in his left knee.
Practically no returning varsity experience without Schmeeckle on the court, they went 6-4 before he made his return on Jan. 17.
Now, they’re looking more and more like a dangerous playoff team with Schmeeckle back and gelling with his teammates.
The junior scored 24 points in the win against Skyline, which put a halt to a three-game skid that saw the Raptors lose by just three to No. 11 Longmont on Feb. 13 and by only five to 6A No. 24 Monarch on Tuesday.
“It was really hard and took 11 months to get back here,” Schmeeckle said. “I’m here now. And I get to be with coach (Bob) Banning and all the guys I love.”
Schmeeckle scored five points during a pivotal 13-2 run that put the Raptors up 10 in the third, then scored five straight in the waning minutes to help secure things.
For the Falcons (8-15, 1-12), meanwhile, it was another hard-fought performance — led by 18 points from DJ Swan and 17 from McCray — that ultimately ended in a loss under first-year coach Joe Lundstrom.
Now, they’ll just have to wait and see their fate.
Coming into the night, the No. 40 Falcons were slightly behind No. 39 Pueblo County and owned a small lead over No. 41 Roosevelt in the rankings. Pueblo County has no games remaining, while the Roughriders traveled to No. 32 Thompson Valley on Saturday.
The 40-team postseason fields in 6A and 5A are based off CHSAA’s Selection and Seeding Index, though league champs — no matter their CHSAA ranking — get automatic bids.
Either way, senior Jamal Gilliam said, “it’s been a good journey with these guys, especially with Johnny and DJ. It’s been one heck of a ride.”
