Harvey man charged with having dogfighting equipment; dogs removed from home
A 59-year-old Harvey man was charged with possessing dogfighting equipment after Cook County sheriff's police allegedly found training gear and three dogs with physical problems at his home.
According to a news release from the sheriff's office, Tyran Johnson turned himself in Tuesday. Sheriff's investigators, based on a tip, had executed a search warrant Nov. 4 at his home in the 14700 block of Washington Avenue.
Investigators found one dog with scars that appeared to be underweight, another that had scars, and a third that also appeared to be underweight, according to the release. A fourth dog was found in good health.
Investigators also found “a modified treadmill and spring poles among other equipment associated with training dogs to fight,” according to the release.
The four dogs are being cared for at Chicago Animal Care and Control.
According to the sheriff's office, Johnson has two prior arrests for violations of animal owner's duties for which he received conditional discharge and court supervision.
