Lamar Jackson will miss a third consecutive game with a hamstring injury when the Baltimore Ravens host the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
The Ravens ruled Jackson out Saturday, while also saying he was not in fact a full participant in practice the previous day. Jackson was initially listed as a full participant Friday — and questionable for Sunday’s game. But now the team has downgraded him to out — and said he was actually limited Friday.
“Lamar Jackson was present for and participated fully in our entire Friday practice ahead of Sunday’s game against the Bears,” the Ravens said in a statement. “Upon further evaluation today and after conferring with the league office, because Lamar didn’t take starter reps in practice, we updated our report to reflect his practice participation.”
A league spokesman said the NFL would look into the matter, which it does whenever there’s a change in a player’s status.
According to league policy, full participation means 100% of a player’s normal repetitions. For example, a player who participates with the scout team during the team portion of practice would still be considered limited if his normal reps would have been with the starters were it not for his injury.
Baltimore (1-5) has little margin for error after a poor start to the season. The Ravens lost to Houston and the Los Angeles Rams without Jackson, and even an open date last weekend wasn’t enough for them to get the two-time MVP back.
Tyler Huntley is expected to start Sunday in Jackson’s place after Cooper Rush was the starter against the Texans and Rams.
Falcons’ QB question
The Atlanta Falcons promoted quarterback Easton Stick to the active roster from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins, providing more depth with starter Michael Penix Jr.’s status uncertain.
Penix is listed as questionable with a bone bruise on his left knee after being limited in practice through the week.
Kirk Cousins, the former starter who lost his job to Penix for the final three games last season, would start if Penix is held out. Saturday’s move would allow Stick to serve as Cousins’ backup against the Dolphins.
Coach Raheem Morris said Wednesday the team would protect Penix and “will not put him in harm’s way” if he failed to show in practice he had the necessary mobility to elude pass rushers and play the position.
When asked Wednesday if he expects to start, Penix said: “That’s the plan. Heck yeah.”
Fields back in for Jets
After a week of secrecy and speculation, the mystery surrounding who’ll start at quarterback for the New York Jets is over. It’ll be Justin Fields against the Bengals.
The team announced Saturday that Tyrod Taylor was ruled out with a knee injury and wasn’t making the trip to Cincinnati. So, head coach Aaron Glenn will turn back to the struggling Fields.
Glenn said Wednesday he knew who his starter would be but declined to announce the decision publicly.
Taylor’s knee injury made it a moot point when he was ruled out Saturday — a day after Glenn made no indication that the veteran QB was in danger of missing the game.
