There’s a war coming to Long Beach, and tortillas will be launched, meats will be grilled and stomachs will be filled at the inaugural Taco Death Match.
Yes, it’s tacos to the death, and what a way to go.
“We’ll have some known tacos, and we have some very untraditional stuff that I think is going to bring some very exciting new flavors that people aren’t used to,” said Sal Flores, an organizer of the new event that will pit 10 local taco makers against each other in a daylong competition in the streets of downtown Long Beach.
The event will not only honor the ubiquitous taco but also the Day of the Dead, since each competitor has been tasked with creating one-of-a-kind tacos dedicated to dead loved ones.
“Each of the chefs will create one taco to someone as an ofrenda. For example, if their grandma loved mole they’ll have that,” Flores said. “So these are tacos that are going to be exclusive to this event.”
Competitors for the outdoor event include some of the area’s most respected chefs and taco outfits, including food trucks like Asadero Chikali, which specializes in mesquite-grilled carne asada tacos.
Also on the Death Match roster is Long Beach’s Bar Becky, a spot opened by “Hell’s Kitchen” runner-up chef Johnathan Benvenuti.
Then there’s chef Jason Witzl of Long Beach’s Ellie’s, who’s worked at some of the most respected restaurants in the area, including the celebrated Campanile and Michelin-star Water Grill in downtown L.A.
The tacos will be paired with beer from local breweries and will be judged by professional eaters and festival attendees who will vote for the crowd favorite. The breweries will feature some that just won gold medals at the Great American Beer Festival. They include Ambitious Ales, a winner in the juicy/hazy IPA category; Trademark Brewing, which won for its West Coast IPA; and ISM Brewing, a bronze honoree for its Classic Saison. Music will be provided by cumbia and mariachi bands.
