Karen Fults Kaler and Christine Podas-Larson are winners of Gebhard Awards that recognize outstanding books and articles on Minnesota’s human-built environment published in the preceding two years. Presented by the Minnesota chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. Kaler’s book is “Eastcliff: History of a Home” (University of Minnesota Press), about the house on the East Bank of the Mississippi River that has been home to University of Minnesota presidents for more than six decades. The author lived in the house for eight years during her husband’s tenure as university president. Podas-Larson wrote the winning article, “The Aesthetics of Bridge Design: A Pean to Two of St. Paul’s Elegant Park Bridges,” about the Phalen Park South Cannel Bridge (1910) and the Montreal Bridge (1927) in St. Paul’s Highland Park.

Say goodbye to the Loft’s Wordplay festival, which has ended with little fanfare to be replaced with a quarterly reading series. That leaves the popular Twin Cities Book Festival, presented by Rain Taxi Review, as the only big event that offers a way for readers and writers to mingle. So mark your calendars for Oct. 19, when the festival will welcome thousands of lit lovers to the Progress Center at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. There will be award-winning Minnesota writers and others from outside the state, rare book dealers, exhibits by local presses and literary organizations, and a used book/records sale. It’s free and there’s plenty of free parking.
