Three times the San Dimas girls water polo team reached the CIF Southern Section semifinals and three times it came up short of advancing to the final.
Not the fourth time.
San Dimas sophomore center Faith Kearns scored three goals and junior Bella Marroquin added three goals Tuesday to lead the Saints to a 9-4 victory over No. 1 seed Beaumont in the Division 4 semifinals.
The Saints are moving on to their first championship game.
“It feels amazing, there’s no other way to put it,” San Dimas coach Jessee Johnston said.
San Dimas (20-8) will take on Troy (16-12) in Saturday’s championship game at Mt. San Antonio College at 9:30 a.m.
San Dimas, the fourth seed, beat Westridge (13-9) and Malibu (8-6) on their way to the semifinals.
It has received solid play from its goalkeeper, Madison Curtis, who had 11 saves and three steals in Tuesday’s victory.
“Madison has been great,” Johnston said. “Faith has been our top scorer by far this season, but Madison has made some big contributions in goal.”
FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART TO PLAY FOR DIVISION 3 title
Flintridge Sacred Heart has only 10 players on its girls water polo roster and had to take an extended break during the season because of the Eaton fire and a broken heater in its pool.
But the Tologs pushed through all of the adversity and knocked off Long Beach Poly, 14-9, in the Division 3 semifinals Tuesday, advancing to their first CIF-SS championship game.
Flintridge Sacred Heart (13-10) will take on No. 1 seed Elsinore (25-1) in Saturday’s championship game at Mt. San Antonio College at 6 p.m. Elsinore knocked off La Canada, 14-8, in the other semifinal.
Lily Wagner scored a game-high six goals in the win over Long Beach Poly. Marisol Cowles, normally the team’s top scorer, finished with five goals despite feeling ill.
“Lily’s tough, she’s been playing club for a while,” FSHA coach Carlos Ponce said. “Even when the defense crashes on her, she finds a way to get open.”
