Two days after a “gathering” resulted in a man being shot and the city’s SWAT team being called out, Elgin police and city officials have not released any specific details about what occurred Sunday morning in the 100 block of South Commonwealth Avenue.
It is not known how many people congregated in the area or for what reason, why SWAT team members were needed, if any arrests were made or what provoked the shooting.
Other than to identify the victim as an “adult male with a gunshot wound” who was found in the 800 block of South Carr Street, police have not provided his age or address, the context in which he was shot or the extent of his injuries, if he knew his assailant or if anyone was being questioned or in custody.
Police Chief Ana Lalley said Tuesday, “We will be releasing something today when the police department is ready to release it.”
No release had been made public as of 3 p.m. Tuesday.
City spokesman Jeff Knox and Mayor Dave Kaptain could not be reached for comment.
The incident marked the second time in less than a week that a person was shot in Elgin.
In the Sunday morning incident, initial posts on the Elgin Police Department Facebook page said there was a “large police presence” first in the 100 block of South Dubois Avenue that later shifted to the 100 block of South Commonwealth.
In an update, the post said that a man was found shot at 8:55 a.m. in the 800 block of South Carr Street, an incident “related to the gathering,” and that the police SWAT team had been called to the scene.
The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment, but the post offered no information as to what happened, why police believed the two incidents were related, if the victim knew his assailant or if anyone had been taken into custody in connection with the shooting or gathering.
The earlier shooting occurred about 7:20 p.m. April 23 in the 1100 block of Dundee Avenue, a police Facebook post said.
Stemming from a traffic dispute that evolved into a physical altercation, a man — later identified as a police sergeant by the Rolling Meadows Police Department — fired a gun, resulting in minor injuries to the man with whom he was fighting, the post said.
Carlos Saez, 58, of the 100 block of Dickens Trail, Elgin, was charged by the Kane County state’s attorney’s office with aggravated battery-deadly weapon, aggravated battery-public way and reckless discharge of a firearm, all felonies, the post said.
Saez has been released from the Kane County jail pending his next court appearance.
The latest shootings bring the total number of gunfire incidents to nine so far this year, with three people shot, according to the police department’s Transparency Hub.
At the same time last year, there had been 25 gunfire incidents, the data showed.
