INGLEWOOD >> Eric Dailey Jr. scored 18 points, making four 3-pointers, and No. 22 UCLA edged 14th-ranked Gonzaga 65-62 on Saturday in the first college basketball game played at Intuit Dome, the new home of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers.

Ryan Nembhard’s basket gave Gonzaga a 60-58 lead with 56 seconds left before the Bruins (11-2) scored five points in a row. Sebastian Mack converted a three-point play with 33 seconds remaining to put UCLA ahead, and Skyy Clark hit two free throws 20 seconds later.

Nembhard then drove the length of the court and scored while getting fouled. After a timeout, he missed the potential tying free throw with 8 seconds to go.

Mav’s Marshall and Suns’ Nurkic suspended for fight >> The NBA suspended Dallas Mavericks forward Naji Marshall for four games and Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic for three games for their roles in an on-court fight during Friday night’s game.

Dallas forward P.J. Washington was suspended one game. All of the suspensions handed down are without pay.

Nurkic was called for an offensive foul while being guarded by Daniel Gafford with 9:02 left in the third quarter before the altercation quickly escalated. Nurkic confronted Marshall before taking an open-handed swing at his head and then Marshall responded with a punch. Washington quickly shoved Nurkic to the ground before the teams were separated.

The NBA said that Marshall “attempted to further engage Nurkic in a hostile manner in the corridor outside the locker rooms.”

Doncic latest burglary victim >> Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks is the latest professional athlete whose home has been burglarized.

The star guard’s business manager told multiple media outlets there was a break-in at Doncic’s home. Lara Beth Seager said nobody was home at the time of the incident Friday night, and Doncic filed a police report.

Jewelry valued at about $30,000 was stolen, the Dallas Morning News reported, according to an internal police report it obtained.

Spurs’ Wembanyama plays chess in New York park >> Victor Wembanyama went to a park in New York City and played 1-on-1 with fans. He even lost a couple of games.

Not in basketball, though.

Wemby was playing chess. And this wasn’t on a whim: He knows how to play and even brought his own chess set.

Before the Spurs left New York for a flight to Minnesota, Wembanyama put out the call on social media: “Who wants to meet me at the SW corner of Washington Square park to play chess? Im there,” Wembanyama wrote.

It was 9:36 a.m. People began showing up almost immediately.

Defending champ US beats Latvia >> Notre Dame forward Danny Nelson scored twice, Western Michigan’s Hampton Slukynsky made 25 saves and the defending champion United States beat Latvia 5-1 in the world junior hockey championship.

The United States improved to 2-0 in Group A play, while Latvia dropped to 1-1 a day after stunning Canada with a 3-2 victory in a shootout.

Boston College’s Ryan Leonard, Denver’s Zeev Buium and Minnesota Duluth’s Max Plante also scored for the Americans. They will be back in action Sunday at Canadian Tire Centre against Finland, then close group play Tuesday night against Canada.

Baseball

Red Sox sign Buehler to one year deal >> The Boston Red Sox announced that they signed right-hander Walker Buehler, a two-time All-Star who was on the mound when the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the World Series this fall, to a one-year deal.

Buehler, 30, went 1-6 with a 5.38 ERA in the 2024 regular season after missing all of the previous year recovering from Tommy John surgery.
