LOWELL >> A UMass Lowell first-year student died after a fall from the Richard P. Howe Bridge late Friday morning.

UMass Lowell released a statement confirming that first responders recovered the body of the student from the Merrimack River beneath the bridge at around 11:40 a.m.

The student was identified by the university as a computer science major from Lowell. The Lowell Police have notified the student’s family of the tragic incident.

“The university extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of this individual,” UMass Lowell said in the statement. “At this time, the university is providing, and will continue to provide in the days to come, expanded mental health services to all members of the campus community affected by this incident.”

Emergency radio broadcasts first reported an individual falling from the Richard P. Howe Bridge, located on University Avenue within UMass Lowell’s North Campus, shortly after 11:10 a.m. Crews on scene observed movement from the individual and initially detected a faint pulse upon reaching him.

Rescue efforts involved the Lowell Fire Department, the Lowell Police, and UMass Lowell Police.
